Not a direct relation or side project of ours.

We are, however, very very good friends with Ben. He was previously working with Freethought (a brand in Twelve Percent Beer Project - thus the connect to GSB), but went off to do his own thing.

I mean I think the understanding here is post-prohibition considering 99% of even super knowledgeable craft drinkers aren’t well aware of breweries from the Wilson administration.

Ahh okay that makes sense. Appreciate the info and I look forward to trying his stuff.

The reason I used the term "weird" is that when I stopped there in early 2020, it was after Shmaltz sold their brewery to Singlecut, so the shelves in the tap room were just half full of vintage bottles of various years of Jewbelation, etc. (which I did buy some of), it definitely gave the vibe of a "going out of business" sale.

Their situation now seems even more confusing. I see they had a big press release last year indicating Jeremy Cowan was closing down the Shmaltz brand at the end of 2021 - but based on their website they are still selling beer.

Yeah I was wondering myself how that was gonna work. It was a huge brand so they’ll have stock for a bit but IDK what the plan is after that. Could turn it into a beer bar but with the Ruck, Browns, Rare Form, Elixr 16, Slidin Dirty and the Troy Beer Garden already in town that doesn’t seem a super viable business model.

Are you talking breweries that exclusively brew lagers?

NY had the third most number of breweries after Repeal (after PA & WI), while many brewed both ales and lagers (like the two survivors, Genesee and Matt), I'm sure there were many lager-only brewers, too.

In the mid-80s, Matthew Reich's short-lived Old New York Brewing Co. flagship was a lager, New Amsterdam Amber Beer.

Wilson? The guy who instituted so-called Wartime (WWI) Prohibition which limited beer to no more than 2.75% abw?

(Yeah, he was in office for the enactment of the 18th Amendment but IIRC didn't really have a lot to do with it. His veto of the Volstead Act was overridden).

I was trying to be nice with my first response but the point — which I thought fairly obvious — was that “now NY will have its first lager brewery of the craft beer boom.” Our own Schilling, Notch, Jacks Abby, Dovetail, etc.

It was not an invitation for pedantry regarding long-forgotten purveyors of bland lager.

You haven’t lived until you’ve done a 12-year Jewbilation vertical. I don’t want to say all Jews taste the same, but they sure did by pour #5.

Nah they make a lot of shit. Mixed-ferm beers especially but also some pale ales too. They DO make the best lagers in NY — and some of the best in the country — it’s just not all they do.

Sixpoint finally opening their taproom in Brooklyn “sometime this summer”. Renderings of it look great, gonna be real close to Circa Brewing.

I wonder if the Gowanus brewery and taproom died entirely.

    Got some movement in Kingston.

Great Life, which under-the-radar makes some real nice beer, has been sold and will be moving to a winery a bit south, Red Maple Vineyard. It’s an absolutely gorgeous location so I’ll be excited to check that out when it happens.

In even better news, West Kill is opening a second location in Kingston. Right in the one downtown area (not the one on the river) so they’ll do killer business. Opening this summer.

Glad to hear and not surprised. If you’re making altbiers there’s a 102% chance I’m gonna love your brewery.

Anyone know any info on noble savage brewery in the Long Island NY town of glen cove? What I do know is they’re a very small “farm” brewery using all NY grains. Their IPAs look legit. They also brew lagers. 2 barrel system from what I gather. And they bottle... and do crowlers. It’s a half hour from where I live in queens. Never heard about this place but saw an Untappd friend check them in.

According to an Asbury Park Press article (behind a paywall) the now-closed Dark City brewery in A.P. is going to re-open under the same ownership of Pt. Pleasant Beach's Last Wave, as Wild Air Beerworks this summer.

They’re solid. If you’re in the area, stop in, but for sure not worth going out of your way for. I don’t mean that to sound harsh, they’re just not a destination brewery taproom-wise or beer-wise.

Looks like Lasting Joy Brewing gearing up to open next month and Suarez should be re-opened by then so I know where I’ll be in May.
