Sometimes I'll get a can that feels grimey or even sticky (likely from spilled beer) so I'll wipe those down real quick.

Good topic. It's something I never really thought about until now. I guess it's never considered just how many hands touch that one can of beer.

It's like when you buy a glass. It was on the shelf for who knows how long. So it's always been normal to wash it before using it.

I always wipe the top of the cans. Even when they look clean, I sometimes get gunk on my paper towel.

Wow. I run a medium/large bottling facility (winery) and we do a reasonable amount of canning. There is no way that can should have ended up in a box in that condition. Only reasonable explanation would be if there are large holes in the box, which I doubt, or if the pack was left open in a warehouse for some time and resealed.

Any grease from the bottling line should be food grade, though you never know I guess, I’ve heard of people doing really boneheaded things.

For almost all of the lid gunk on these cans others have talked about it would almost always be from not having a really thorough rinse/blow off on the can during canning. The canning process tends to be really freaking messy.

Over 50 posts so far and none of the BAs who collect cans have chimed in with the 'answer'. Just open the can from the bottom.

    All you need is:
    Vise
    Phillips-head screwdriver or ice pick
    Hammer

    Step by step instructions here:

Never. Nor am I going to start. But my old man always does. Has been doing it my whole life. He used to run a sandwich shop and he said he every time he grabs a can he envisions rats running across the soda cans they had in their storage unit, ha ha. Yeah, his sandwich shop didn’t last long.

edit: wait. My bad. I did clean cans, not just tops, but entire cans, with bleach water in the early weeks of the Covid pandemic. Gave that up once the science was pretty clear that the likelihood of it living on surfaces for any sustain time was next to nothing.

Never have. Have to keep my immune system strong. I also follow the five-second rule and share food. I wash my hands regularly, but that's about it. Having seen first-hand people who suffer from actual germaphobia and how horrible it can make their lives, I fear developing it myself, so l try to approach these things logically with a dose of bravado.

Can’t say I’ve ever done that. Then again, I can’t even remember the last time I drank from the can, I always pour into the glass. Though I do recall wiping off a few cans coming back from the store when they were visibly dirty (I’m a little uptight about that, anything that goes into the fridge I like to be clean. Or at least, not visibly dirty)

To everyone saying that they don't drink from the can, neither do I, but all of that gunk is hiding mainly in that little groove that runs around the top of the can and the beer pools in and runs through that when pouring

I'm no germaphobe at all, but my beer running through all that gunk and maybe taking some of it with it into the glass still gives me the heebie-jeebies. Of course most cans are fine though, but there's always one or two cans in a haul that produce results like seen in the picture.
