Why do you drink at Bars, Breweries or Taprooms?

Here’s what being an introvert means to me:

1 on 1 or 1 on 2 conversations are fine. Conversations with strangers? Sometimes fine, often times not especially if it feels forced or like you are searching for something to say. And being around lots of people or forced to talk to lots of people, or being crowded around lots of people leaves you feeling exhausted.

The idea of doing “net working” where you go into a room with 100 people you have never met and are told to make connections? My own personal ring of hell.

I love going out to eat, and I love going out to eat with my wife. I love her more than the world, and in many ways I can tune everything out and focus just on her. But when the music or TVs of number of people are too loud? It’s not only no longer unenjoyable because of that, but it is sensory overload.

top three for me: enjoyment of fresh beer from tap, supporting local brewery with nice vibes and delicious brews, and excuse (or rather, a purpose) to go on a hike or bicycle-ride (there and back). I do occasionally get some to-go from there as well, which admittedly is with a slightly lower per-pint pricetag.

Also, ⓪sometimes I'm eating at a restaurant (instead of at home, for whatever reason—pros or cons of being an ardent hermit is somewhat besides the matter) that has on draught a beer that I fancy or that I want to try, so why not get a pint that I crave.

Indeed, some sports bars promote this sort of dissonance, and poorly sound-designed restaurants in general (particularly when crowded.. crowds in general being among my chief displeasures).

I won't give my money to any establishment that won't permit my well behaved exotic pets.

Didn't want to bring this up as a reason not to do my drinking at home, but my Eek-a-Mouse Maine **** kitty had the same sort of onrey attitude. Used to annoy him something awful if I didn't spend my time keeping him entertained. So drinking beer at home was decidedly verboten.

I always felt it was important to keep the peace at home, so... Drinking out and about always seemed like a small price to pay to keep him happy. Least I could do.

This crusty old anti-social dude drinks his beer in the comfort of his home 9 times out of 10. Not the biggest fan of society. I've seen things. ✌

I’d probably describe myself the same way, especially the networking thing.

"Why do you drink at Bars, Breweries or Taprooms?"

I haven't been much of a social drinker since college, decades ago. Now I only go to a taproom occasionally either to meet a friend, or to have a specific beer I can't get in a crowler. I'd rather relax with a beer at home where I don't have to worry about driving home.

I was at first a bit taken aback by the number of posts where folks stated they were introverts, didn’t like crowds, etc. but then I thought: internet forums are the perfect thing for people like that.

Maybe I should start a poll asking BAs whether they are introverts vs. extroverts?

    Cheers!

I considered it, actually. Ideally, though, you would have a spectrum since everyone falls somewhere on the spectrum. Personally, I am on the introvert side but not terribly far from the center. That might seem odd based on my post above, but there is a constant internal dialogue vs what I have had to force myself to do for work. I HAVE to meet new people, often in uncomfortable situations. I have to pitch new projects, solicit funding and so on. I sometimes have to be thrown into those “meet and greet” situations, and I don’t do well and they are certainly exhausting. But, I can do them. My wife is an introvert as well, but she is further down the spectrum, with everything being much more taxing for her.

Obviously presentations aren’t many people’s forte, regardless of where you fall, but they certainly seem harder for introverts. I have a major presentation I need to give in August in front of ~500 people, and it is about the most terrifying thing I have ever had to consider doing.:grimacing::flushed:

Have you ever used the 'trick' of imaging the audience is naked?

Myers-Briggs type INTP here. Whether that raises more questions than it answers is anybody's guess. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I haven’t tried it. I am a bit stubborn, but I am not sure some of my traits would allow that to work for me. By that I mean that things like meditation and hypnosis work for some people (but not all). Not everyone…for lack of a better term, characteristics, allow them to be subtle to such suggestions. In the same vein, I’m not sure I could conceivably imagine/convince myself of that for it to work. But, I do understand that such things work for others.

Good question. Still haven't figured out which I am. Must be an elusive mix . Maybe a covered up introvert?

Can’t remember the last time I was at a bar. I do enjoy restaurants for the food/drink combo. I like going to breweries to try/sample new beer and to hang out with a friend or two. Exciting answer, I know.

Looks like most of the regular brewery/taproom patrons live in areas with several convenient locations making above average beer.

I rarely drink at my local breweries because those conditions just don't apply.

There's a taproom downtown with okay beers and decent burgers, but it is aimed at people who are already in the area; short weekend hours, limited parking, inconvenient unless you live or work downtown.
There's convenient brewery with not bad beer and pretty good pizza, but it is more like a restaurant than a brewery; definitely geared toward groups spending a couple of hours eating & drinking rather than individuals who simply want to try their different beers (short bar and some of the most uncomfortable stools I've ever sat on).
Finally, there's a close brewery that specializes in “extreme beers” and hosts the occasional food truck. I've stopped 3 times in the past couple of years and each time all 6 taps were heavily flavored beers. Their website has been “under construction” for over three years so, since I don't use Facebook, I have no idea if what's on tap is anything I'm interested in.

We do have an active daily thread where online users can post what they're drinking, and 'converse' with other online users.

FWIW, I self-identify as an introvert. I've never really enjoyed crowds, and I think 'falling out of practice' during COVID has just made that worse for me.
