I get your point and I'm a believer of more info is better than less, however if someone adds a beer just by reading the breweries' site it seems like a waste to me.

If I look up a beer on BA that has only been added and not reviewed/rated then I will go the that breweries site for information. It is a plus when the brewers notes are added, but I would rather see a BA members own thoughts and impressions about the beer.

I guess I would ask a waste of what?
I hear you, and totally agree that I prefer a review to a rating or the notes. I especially prefer a review from someone I am familiar enough with to trust their review. But realistically, with the number of new beers being added to the site and the market daily, it is just not feasible to require a full review to add a new beer.

Maybe a waste was not the best turm to use in this case. I think that adding but not reviewing or rating does not really help out that much. If a beer is in BAs data base then it might lead to BA members giving it a try, as you mentioned.

I speak for myself only by saying that I would rather not add beers without a review. Cheers.

I don't know, maybe I am crazy but, to me, you sound like you have a few members of BA that you are indirectly calling out...

I have no such intentions, and I have no issues with members who add beers without reviews or ratings.

It annoys me to see a beer added and left without a review/rating for months or years, but life goes on. Cheers.

Then my apologies to the person that I misquoted.

I think it comes down to why we each use the site, which is obviously for varying reasons. For me, and presumably @Amendm (though I don’t want to put words in his mouth), finding a beer exists in BA rarely does anything for me. Nearly 109% of the time I know it exists, because I’m looking at it. What I hope to find here above that or a brewer’s site or Untappd are others’ thoughts, hopefully trusted individuals, as you mention.

I do see your point about adding a beer in certain situations, as I’m not totally immune to it. But my decision to add brings in a few other things, since it really is only like 4 fields that takes like 30 seconds on top of the rating / review I was already considering. These decision factors include how limited the beer, how local the brewery, and/or how large their “portfolio” is.

All that said, my panties are un-bunched and I’ve no stick in my ass about any of these things, merely thoughts an observations. Cheers!

I still find it a little strange why people here care how other people use the site. I’ll say again, I will often add beers without reviewing them right away, or sometimes, ever. Like I said earlier, I feel like I’m helping out by adding beers to the site. The thing is, I really only drink on weekends but I use BA all week long. So when I might add a new beer from an Instagram post I was reading, I don’t have the beer on front of me nor am I even drinking at the time. If some of you for your own strange reasons think this is wrong, I guess that’s your issue.

You'd better add reviews - your one of the people whose reviews I specifically look for!

I highly doubt that people do this "for internet points". They do it because they want to tick the beer they are currently drinking and can't be arsed to put in any effort besides that.

Also, I add my beers and take pictures on the day that I buy them, complete with notes, then I add pictures whenever I get around to it, since it's such a time-consuming process, and then I add a review once I actually drink the beer. There may be an intervall of several days or even weeks between these steps.

I’ve seen so many beers added to my local breweries from people several states away with no review, picture, notes, and occasionally even an error in style or ABV. I can’t see any reason why anyone would do this other than “beer karma”. As has been stated throughout the thread, if you’re adding correct and complete information, the argument can be made for trying to keep the database robust and up to date. But, if you’re randomly adding beers with no rhyme, reason, or detail to actually help someone who’s researching the beer then I really can’t see what other explanation can be made for someone doing this. Cheers.

Point taken, however, they are still adding data to the site and it's not like there's a lot we can do about it anyway. Approving every single new beer entry would be a herculean task.

I think one of the reasons people take offense at this, and this is something I suspected even before a user kind of confirmed it to me in a private message, is that they feel that lazy people who do not put enough effort into listing a beer are stealing internet points from legitimate users that put actual work into their contribution.

While I can kind of understand this point of view, it also seems a little overzealous to me, to be honest. But I'm not trying to judge, only to offer an explanation. Awarding karma for adding notes to a beer, might be one way to deal with this issue, but I believe that this has been brought up before and wasn't really feasible for technical reasons. Don't quote me on that though, this is just how I remember it.

I get it and if you read through the full OP, you know I’m not expecting extra actions from moderators, I’m asking people who choose to contribute to do so in a manner that’s beneficial to the community. Adding a bunch of useless, incorrect data to the site isn’t helping anyone. Cheers.

I noticed a few duplicates lately. The moderators fixed them quick smart after I sent in an edit request. Once again, our mods here are outstanding.

I can't believe I waded through so many scrolls of this, but it's an important topic. However, if you find a beer entry that is inaccurate, and therefore possibly tainted with IMPROPER MOTIVES, please just click that "Update This Beer" button and tell all. I hope someone will correct my own slap-happy additions. Yes, we're just here for the facts, and damn why is my glass empty..........
