oops....in one of my previous replies I thought Gorm was asking me about mixing the copper. I'm now thinking he was asking @Jasonja1474 about mixing/applying neem oil.
    My bad......

Earwigs...they're nibbling on my leaves. There aren't many, less than a handful on 6 bines.

I've read they're a mixed blessing, causing damage to leaves but also being a predator of other insects.
Trying to strike a balance.....they're the only pests I've seen and I'm wondering if eradicating them completely is worth the repeated application on neem oil, which gets rid of them for a few days.

    Hahahah, dam nature, hahaha.

earwigs don’t have any experience with them at all.

I’d say if you did not have them before and do now, look at what they wanna eat. Could be they are cleaning up a insect infestation that would be worse.

How much watering do people use per day for their crops? I may plant Cascade...

Where I'm at the rains been doing it. Drier I water or if starting a new root daily.

I'll add one thing. I think it helps to have birds around. I planted trees and scrubs around the yard and lots of birds inspect the binds for bugs feeding young in nearby nests.

Post #40 is one person's opinion. Michigan State University's ag program has a good section for hop growing on their website as one authoritative source.

Strange year. I had to cut my cascade plants down because a bunch of hops dried up and we had plenty of rain. This usually happens around Sept and I can't blame the neighbor because they grew about 15ft up an antenna.

[IMG] [IMG][IMG] I took Rip’s advice and bought some Copper Fungicide and treated the hops. The one that looked dead has grown new leaves and the other 2 has shot stringers everywhere. They may live after all.

I might be late to the game, but I just bought 2 potted plants: one Cascade and one Chinook. I have read that they need to be planted by May in order to ensure 4 frost-free months. I expect them to be about six inches high or so, and it won't freeze here until late Oct. at the earliest.

Do you think I'm in time (I also read that it takes them two years to produce cones, so when I say 'in time' I mean for them to take hold and be ready for next year)?

    Thanks.

I think you'll be okay. The 'planted by May' saying probably applies to planting rhizomes which have no growth at all. Your plants are in pots and, I assume, already growing.

My chinook (5th year) are going insane, I will try and post a pic once I'm back from being out of town. I also planted some Columbus rhizomes this year but haven't seen anything... yet. I don't expect much out of them this year but was expecting to see a few shoots at least. We also purchased a really nice food dehydrator since our kids love dried fruit, but I'm looking forward to using it on some chinook cones!

Just wanted to report that my balcony hops are doing great. The overwintered well in the ceramic pots and started growing bines in April. I live in Frankfurt, Germany, and the climate seems perfect for hops, not too hot or cold.
This is the 3rd year for these 3 plants, and they seem to love their location, which faces west and doesn't get sun until 1 or 2 pm, but then it lasts till 8 pm in summer. I water almost every day as they seem quite thirsty. The bines grown about 6+"/day. Per plant, about 6 to 8 bines started in April, but only 2 are really the big growers. The one in the picture is Cascade.

Burrs started forming on the Goldings yesterday.
Cascade will probably show them this time next week or sooner.

Finally have some little cones forming. The bines are about 8ft tall now. [IMG] [IMG] So exciting to have hops growing.

    Cheers!

My hops feel behind this year... it has been dry but not horrible. I have been not doing so well with IPM as I am trying to be good to my new honey bees. That being said, a lot of the cascade, comet and galena is doing OK. The EKG by my garage is doing pretty solid. The rest of the yard is kind of rough, but I am trying to get better at being out at the break of dawn to do my mold/pest treatments.

Whoa! Those are some BIG cones and it is only the very beginning of July. Is that typical for your plants? When is a typical harvest time for you?

    Cheers!
