My offering today is a highy unsessionable Monumental Dark Ale from Hoppin Frog called Gavel Slammer clocking in at a paltry 17.4%........ and yeah, I think this is an Imperial Stout, not a brown Ale, but WTF do I know.....

Pours a thick'n chewy almost black, the small khaki head fades quickly, no lacing left behind, none expected, but it does leave an "oily film" on the glass. I'm not one to bitch about "heat" from BA beers, but this one has it. Aroma is booze from the get go, them we get some heavy roast aroma, malt, chicory some chocolate, molasses, all those flavors coat the tongue. I like big, boozy beers, and this is among the booziest yet. This is a sipper for sure!

EDIT: This is listed as a brown Ale, but IMHO, it's an Imperial Stout.....

Back with a big boozey imperial stout. Free Will Double Barrel Aged Ralphius, this version was bourbon and then whiskey barrels and clocks in at 17.5%!!!
@rolltide8425 Thank you for this one! very appreciative of our swap.

    onto my review:

Sampling a 12.7 oz bottle from 2020 at cellar temp and pouring into my snifter.
The beer pours a dark black coffee color with a fizzy tan head that is extremely short lived, I didnt even catch it in my photo. There is no remnant of foam anywhere in the glass.
Aroma is some dark chocolate and whiskey notes with a good dose of fusol alcohol as well. Im surprised it still smells so hot after being in the cellar for almost 2 years. No real hop character on the nose, but I do get a little bit of charred wood and some leather notes buried behind the booziness.
First sip reveals a fairly thick body with a smooth texture and soft almost non existent carbonation. Beer leaves a sticky coating across my palate with each sip.
Flavor is roasted malt and molasses up front followed by dark chocolate and whiskey and then a bunch of warming heat. In my mouth and certainly on the swallow, this is boozy. I also get some brown sugar and dark fruit notes after the swallow. Again, no hops on this one.
the whisky also lingers a bit and almost seems more like doing a shot than sipping a beer at times.
This is a big boozey beer with good malt character. Very glad I got to try this one. Its definitely a sipper though!

Poured from an undated 16oz can, dark brown with a small dark brown head that fades away quickly, no lacing.
Rye is noticeable when opening the can, dark chocolate, molasses and oak fill the air, very aromatic. Taste matches the aroma quite nicely.
This is a bit thin for the style and I think a bit more carbonation would add.
    Overall a well done brew.....

One more imperial stout for the weekend. Then Ill see y'all on Thursday again! this beer came as part of my swap with @zdraco thank you! This is oskar Blues 2020 Zuccotto Stout, 12.5% ABV.
Ive been wondering how this beer would play with so many additives in the process. Spoiler alert. I think they all work out just fine! @Resistance88 this is probably way too sweet for you though!!

    onto my review:
Sampling this 12 oz can poured into my trusty snifter. Been eyeing this one up for a bit and a Sunday night after a productive weekend seems like a winner to open it.
The beer pours a jet black color with no light passing through my glass. A minimal tan head foams up and fades to a wispy surface island and thin edge layer soon after the pour.
The aroma is bold fudge notes and some light vanilla hints and roasted malts. I do get a little raspberry and some fusol booze too. No hop character that I can detect. I dont get much from the brandy barrel mentioned on the can, the booze is more of a hot scent and none of the sweeter brandy character I might expect.
First sip reveals a medium body with very smooth and soft texture and mild gentle carbonation. Beer feels very nice on the palate and drinks smooth even with the bigger ABV (12.5%!!)
The flavor is actually more complex than the nose and here I get dark chocolate, fudge brownie, raspberry and some vanilla. I also get some sweet brandy notes towards the finish and again the booze comes through and warms my belly on the swallow. Hops absent in this one.
Pretty glad to have had the opportunity to try this brew. Not as sweet as I would have expected after reading the label, and definitely sneaky with the high ABV and high drinkability!

Good morning you stout lovers and happy monday!

Had this one last night for NBW...

This one was quite enjoyable and it was much more straight up barrel imperial stout than one would assume based on the name; sweetness popped a little more at the end but this was far from a sweet mess. Great stuff IMO.

Kane - The Great Maple (Maple Double Barrel, bourbon then maple barrels)

Pours nice and viscous without being super thick and sludgy, the head is medium brown and actually lingers for quite some time. Settles to thin films of swirly islands and a nice thick ring around the glass. Very nice looking for a barrel aged beer.

The nose is actually not really complex at all; it is mostly bourbon masking some woody char and dark chocolate notes. Swirling it around actually releases some really nice, but subtle, maple notes.

Taste brings out a lot more than the nose that was masked by the bourbon. Definitely taste the bourbon and char but the dark chocolate note really shines and lingers nicely; the maple really shows nicely after the sip is gone and lingers pleasantly along with some bitter dark roast coffee notes.

Big body, nice and creamy without being thick, a nice sweet sensation coats the tongue. Char/roast bite on the back of the tongue with a little bit of heat, mainly sinus canal, and a building warm sensation in the throat.

Overall a very well balanced beer that is more straight up barrel aged stout than one would assume. The maple is actually more noticeable in the aftertaste and feel than anywhere else. I'm glad I bought this beer, I'm really going to enjoy sipping on the rest of it.

Drank two great similar Imperial Stouts over the weekend - my last bottle of 2021 Cinnamon Chile Ralphius by Free Will Brewing (Perkasie, PA), and a bottle of Mexican Cake by Westbrook Brewing that I brought back from a recent trip to South Carolina. Of all flavors that can be added to Imperial Stouts, I am a sucker for that flavor combination, it's my favorite Ralphius variant. Comparing those two beers, I would give the edge to Ralphius as the base beer is both bolder and thicker, but that makes sense as it's 14.7% abv vs Mexican Cake is 10.5% abv.
