Bell's calls LotL a Bohemian Pils, but I find it closer to a German Pils -- definitely not an "American" Pils. I've been recommending it as a replacement for those missing Summerfest.

Give it another try, I had some a few weeks ago and my opinion hasn't changed.

Tough for me to generalize since I haven't had 'em all (and most of the better ones don't distro far), but here goes:

    Bierstadt
    Live Oak
    Dovetail
    New Glarus
    Olde Meck

Meant in terms of origin. I like that beer. I just like certain well-priced imports better so I never have a need to buy it.

Unfortunately, the places around here don't seem to carry a lot of good import Pilsners and one spot in particular has good Bell's sales now and then, so temptation hits.

Eh, I'd take Schell's lagers over NG's most times. Never had Schilling, so can't comment.

schilling made my list bc of their "landbier." pretty delicious. the rest of their repertoire was (as someone else said, above) just alright IMO.

Appreciating the love for Tree House lagers. Trail is one of my favorite beers on tap. Crisp, refreshing, well balanced, easy drinking

[IMG]Stoney’s Brewing out of Smithton, Pa. was another lager of choice back in the mid-80’s. It was also packaged in the 16oz. returnable bottle format. I tried a can of Stoney’s not to long ago for the first time in 30 years. I’m not sure if it’s the same beer as it was back then, but it was an easy drinking inoffensive average lager at best. I think it is now contract brewed at the Latrobe Brewing facility. Cheers.

Interesting history of Stoney’s Brewing since 1907

Schilling was mentioned a few times and I thought that some folks might be interested in reading this article about Schilling Beer Co.

I have had the pleasure of drinking two brands from Schilling: Alexandr (Czech Pilsner) and Georg (Dunkel). I enjoyed drinking both beers; I would recommend Georg to folks who like the Dunkel style.

While not Schilling, a similar NE brewery with a similar reputation...This is how I personally felt about Notch, now it may be unfair cause I only had two of their beers but neither wowed me or stood out, this surprised me because of how many BAs talk highly of them. I did later learn that I think these two beers in particular are ones they contract brew, maybe this had an affect; I'm not sure.

There are plenty of local lagers that are just as good if not better, this is a very good thing. If we don't have to go out of our way for good beer we are in a very good place I think.

Honestly, they're easy to forget since they're isolated to WI and they brew a lot of other styles that get more attention. Plus, they do keep tweaking (or discontinuing) many of my favorites. Still, there's something about them that is just plain magical.

If I had to replace them on my list, I'd probably go with Heater Allen or Rosenstadt from up in OR.

huh. ive been trying to make it to notch for years. agree that it's a great thing that we no longer necessarily have to search nationwide for good lagers.

Have you had it recently? There was some discussion of the changes it went through over the years (maybe even @Domingo was involved), but it's definitely not the same beer I fell in love with in 2011.
