I’ll recommend Afterthought Brewing for bone dry, refreshingly tart saison. 20 miles west of the city, but located right on the train tracks. Go there, or go to a great bottle shop like Beer Temple. Temple will have amazing selection of Belgian and Belgian inspired ales. Ask them about smoked beers too

Dovetail is a great fusion of lagers/lambics. Top notch stuff. Also a real good hefe.

If you love great pale ale, daisy cutter is an institution. Hop butcher Grid just got released and is great as well, more of a show off pale ale, extra dry hopped but crystal clear. Pipeworks Ninja Vs Unicorn is a great west coast DIPA. Also, Working for the Weekend by Spiteful.

you may be able to find some Straight Jacket at Revolution. Maybe others will chime in here, and suggest other Barleywine currently on the market.

You can actually get Cafe Deth, Deth by Raspberries, Deth's Tar, Maple Jacket, and Ryeway all the brewery right now. Straight Jacket isn't available.

Yes, @tennisjoel if you can hit up the Rev Taproom, please do so as you will assuredly be able to pick up some Rev BA beers. Can keep an eye on https://revbrew.com/visit/brewery/tap-room-dl under Cans to Go as well to see what is in stock when visiting.

So I will be driving through Chitown this Saturday for a few hours in the middle of the day before heading to Cincy. Staying in Elgin overnight and plan is as follows. Head to Revolution when it opens at noon, next to Binny's, Off Color, then drive along Lake Shore past downtown and Soldier's Field and head back to I-90 south. I have my 17 & 15 yr old boys with me. What are your suggestions for Hot Dog places along the way? I was scoping out either Hot Dog Station or Doghouse.

Was thinking about 360 or Skydeck but won't have enough time.

You’ll be driving by a lot of great bottle shops as you go east towards the city. Beer Cellar has locations in Geneva and Glen Ellyn. Orange & Brew in Downers Grove. Good spots to find some fresh beer if you have time to make a pit stop

Also, Beer Temple is close to the Freeway so is that a better option than Binny's LP? What's easier for parking?

I should add that with driving (I'm not having my 17 yr old drive through Chicago), I won't be imbibing in more than maybe 1 or 2 beers, so I'm more interested in the bottle shop.

Hmm....looks a little more off the beaten path and likely I'd have to deal with airport traffic.

A portillos dog would be fine I’m sure. Surely you’ll be passing by some of those too

Not too bad if using 90 from Elgin. About a 20 minute trek total from highway to G&J and back to the highway to head to Rev on Kedzie depending on time of day of course... Kinda the staple dog for decades.

That's with the assumption you were headed to the Taproom and not the Brewpub.

Still the same route from 90 and then an even better straight shot to the Brewpub then.

G&J is the quintessential Chicago dog either way. :grimacing:

If Hot Dog Station survived the pandemic I highly recommend forgoing the dog and getting an Italian beef and asking for the jus in a dip cup so you can dunk it yourself each bite. You are welcome.

Sounds delicious, but when in Chicago, gotta try an authentic Chicago dog (I've never had one...made my own but I'm sure it's not the same).

Forgive me for asking all of these questions. What is the mask policy in the city? Does every place pretty much require one indoors or does it vary by location?

    you won’t need a mask.

Edit: @tennisjoel to be more clear - you are welcome to wear a mask, and plenty of people still do wear them - but there is no mask mandate or anything like that.

If you are going to be driving a long Lake Shore Drive, you won't be too far from Jim's Original Maxwell Polish stand. Not quite the same as chicago style hot dog but in my opinion Maxwell St hot dogs and polishes are better. There is also a Binnys a few blocks away on Jefferson St.
