I think it depends on where you live and what the buyer orders. Ours is not great either - row after row of IPA, in solid and mixed 24-packs, and while I like Oberon I don't need a huge box of it. But once a year they get it right.
Myself, I want to hit a Wisconsin Costco one of these days - I fish 5-10 miles from the border on regular basis, and between 50-60 cent cheaper gas, and virtually no beer tax a small detour would pay for itself. Plus I want to see what their NG sampler is like. And Staghorn. I am just waiting for the Black Currant to show up in their locator.

Some states, and Illinois is not one of them.

You can tell from the pattern that it's the same Backpocket as on the left of the shelf.

    That's unfortunate.

You know, it was that way in Michigan and I don't think in 6 years we spent there I used the opportunity even once.

Was going to reply with this too -- and my brother shops in Wisconsin, but if their selection sucks it's not worth the trip.

I bet something else was there, and someone took the last 6-pack and left whatever they decided not to buy in its place.

We don't have the option in PA because our Costco's don't sell beer (yet) but they do in Delaware and where it comes in handy is when breweries like Sierra Nevada offer club exclusive packs, a few years ago they had a really good one with beers that were long gone (Flipside and Vienna Lager).

When we moved to IL from NH it came as a surprise that alcohol is sold everywhere with only real restriction being the age of the cashier. Then we went to MI, and I was surprised again by their ban on Sunday morning sales - apparently so you'd come to the church sober. But that is still better than some of the crazy rules of the East Coast I keep hearing about.

Don't go spreading wrong info about Michigan. The Sunday morning sales thing ended 10 or so years ago by allowing stores to purchase a special permit for Sunday morning sales. I think every place that is open on Sunday morning has one now.

Nice! I found the Toppling Goliath to be surprisingly disappointing.

We left in '10. Did they also end the thing where the state is split into exclusive areas and you just can't get certain stuff if the family distributor that owns it does not carry a particular brand?

Tell us why so we can be educated in our purchase.

This is just a friendly reminder to check date codes. Every year stores or distributors try to sneak in old stock and put it on display next to the new ones so unsuspecting people will buy whatever is on the shelf. I've already seen it this year for fall beers and we're not even to the Christmas beers yet.

PA is getting better very slowly but we still have some odd rules e.g. you can buy beer in some grocery stores now but it's limited to 192 oz (two six packs of 12 oz beers or one 12 pack) so if you want more than that you have to leave the store and come back in for another purchase...and many people do this so it doesn't really solve for much of anything. But at distributors you can still buy as much as you want to in a single purchase.

And as for the original topic the Fall beers are everywhere around me now and yesterday I believe that I passed by a Pumpkin Ale I don't recall ever seeing before. I did not make note of the specifics but will the next time I see it.

Well, I didn't want to influence his purchase. But I found it thin (only 5.2% for a Marzen) with little depth to the malts and a distracting aftertaste.

In heaven they keep those in the beer cave.
