Those stubborn Belgians just refuse to adopt the clunky, illogical, disaster making, yet elegant imperial system of measurement. Fools.

Seriously, what does the elevation have to do wirh aging the beer? Can't imagine it matters, but I'm suddenly shuddering with the thought of some "innovative" brewery trying to ferment beer on Mt. Everest or down in the Mariana Trench.

I see some info about how aging bottles on their sides is less pressure and ages beer faster. Expanding that to atmospheric pressure, lower pressure at higher altitudes could increase the rate of some effects of aging?

Yeah, I honestly don't know about the elevation thing and would like to find out more. As for the upright/sideways bottle thing, the internal pressure would be the same but the surface area exposed to the air in the bottle would be increased. Whether that makes any difference I have no idea.

Vertical vs horizontal is documented to create enough pressure difference to impact fermentation, but I think that usually pertains to yeast activity. I wasn’t sure about pressure affecting aging, which was anecdotally confirmed in the bottle storage thing, but that also was mostly regarding yeast remaining for bottle conditioning and any other bugs meant to impact flavor over time.

If we’re talking barrel aging, which is how that beer was described, then my dots connect at the barrel contents maybe being susceptible to lessened atmospheric pressure at higher altitudes and accelerating the aging rate to 88 miles per hour.

In conclusion, moving my barleywines to the kids’ treehouse. It is my density.

    Sebago 2021 Bourbon Barrel Barleywine

I got a barleywine from these folks in a trade with @joepais a looong time ago and loved it. Apparently they changed the recipe last year and amped up the ABV from 9.2 to 13.75. It's still pretty damn good. Up front is assertively boozy, sweet caramel with hints of chocolate and vanilla as it warms. The finish adds a hoppy/oaky tingle and a strong bourbon exhale. Big, bruising, and unapologetic. I'll be getting more to bring home.

Apparently hopped post- barrel aging. It says it’s smooth, and is it ever. If I was pants I’d be long gone.

A few days ago I had Struise's Clash of the Titans SPECIAL Reserva, today is the GRAND Reserva:rolling_eyes:. Branding could use some work, it wasn't until my second trip to the store that I realized there were two versions for sale. I almost missed out on this one! Whatever though, these are phenomenal beers. This was perfect for a rainy, cool evening in Maine.

The grand reserva has matured for 36 months at Struise brewery in wine barrels from Provins winery in Wallis Switzerland, Olorosso sherry barrels from Jerez Spain, and was blended with the Swiss Grand Cru version that matured at 2364 meters of altitude.

Looks exactly like Special Reserva, murky brown with a thin, short lived head. I did not give the sediment time to settle. The aroma is very different and more intriguing. Strong, fortified wine leaps out of the glass. Under that is a symphony. Green apple, caramel, wet oak, praline, overripe grapes, pipe tobacco, and on and on...

The taste doesn't quite live up to the smell, but it continues to grow on me as it warms. The wine dominates to a greater extent so it's not quite as balanced. The layers are there, just a little harder to find. The tart, vinous oak note doesn't quite let as much shine through but it's still extremely satisfying. Big points for uniqueness as well.

I'm so glad I came across these, I love the effect of extended barrel aging.

Has a package date of 5/23/22. Saw it in stovepipes a year or two ago and jumped at seeing it in a 4-pack. Instant non-regret.

love barleywines; barrel-aged even better. Is Beeradvocate selling any more curated boxes? That way to enjoy beer would still be a good one for my lifestyle. [I live in a tee-totaling country 10 months out of the year.]

They are planning another fest in cyberspace. The theme hasn't been picked yet, but a lot of people were calling for barleywine. https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...-next-beeradvocate-fest-in-cyberspace.668075/

Be ready to cast your vote when the polling opens!

Somebody needs to do an ‘elevation’ side by side when these guys get around to doing this with a Barleywine. 2021 was a RIS, and 2022 was a Tripel. I’m guessing a barelywine is around the corner:
