I'm with Darwin here. I wouldn't call this "culture" so much as necessity driven by hype. People jump at the chance to try extremely limited beer they can't get on draft and have seen listed or talked about in regards to top rated beer lists for years, particularly if they're coming in from out of town. Being priced at a premium and in large format only further necessitates that.

I can imagine most people at Prairie drinking lighter beers not just because of the asinine laws they have down there, but also the weather. Further, not only has Prairie been doing their thing a tad longer, but they've been distributing almost all of that beer across the country from very early on, again in part because of OK laws. So not only have the locals had their fill without any sort of difficulty whatsoever, but Tulsa isn't exactly a tourism destination or even a crossroads. Figure in the drastic drop in hype they've seen over the past 5 years, let alone in comparison with SP, and you have your answer.

There really are only a handful of places on the planet where patrons are sharing large format, highly priced bottles of beer on a regular basis. I think you're really underplaying the hype factor in this whole "culture" aspect. And beer hype fades faster than almost anything else I can think of--SP has bucked that trend formidably, but only temporarily. If you really crave that culture wherever you go, it'd be more suitable to shift into wine, which brings us full circle--at least what I've gathered--to be one of Cory's core inspirations from the jump to begin with.

When it comes to 12 ounce bottles of beer at $20 a pop, that's really just a drop in the bucket compared to high end beverages. If it was that important, you should have bought every bottle you wanted to try and poured yourself a short taster, and then offered them around to anyone else. If no takers, oh well, you're out $60 while having a taste of three bottles you coveted, which is about the same price you'd have paid if you split three SP bottles with three neckbeards in STL, which is closer to my experience (though no neckbeards were harmed).

I'm still curious how Saturday is going to work. Is it going to be bundles or a free for all?

same here. i can’t make it but i would have to imagine that there’s less of OF than the other 2, although that’s just a guess. just a very interesting release in general. to my knowledge, Fermier Day has never been associated with a to-go release (always on site consumption). will they continue to sell the leftovers over the bar on Sunday? will leftovers make it online? beyond bizarre approach but i guess that’s how it’s been the last year or so with the hybrid IP/on-line releases.

    lol

I should have kept it simple.

Getting ahold of an SP bottle was always a lot harder than Prairie. We seem to be at a watershed moment where that is no longer the case, at least so far as most people who wanted a taste of one bottle or another have finally gotten it, and multiple times over. I'm sure the bottle splitting situation today isn't quite what it used to be, even at SP.

    Scarcity is key here.

So not trying to get too far ahead of myself as I'm not planning to be down there until April with a buddy, but is there a "procedure" to do bottle splitting with random patrons? The cellar list looks insane but there will only be two of us and as stated above, that can only get so much done. We'd be willing to join up with a few people and just take turns getting bottles for the table. I like to think we're pretty friendly, especially after a couple bottles! LOL

If you are there at open when no one is really there, you can ask the 1 or 2 people there if they want to. If you show up later you can ask the server if anyone has expressed interest in sharing a bottle (although I have gotten weird looks by asking that, or asking them to let me know if anyone said they wanted to, when there was a lot of people there). Finally, you can simply walk up to someone (or sit next to them) if you see them with a big bottle, and ask if they would want to split (that) bottle (and others), and so on.

In my opinion, this is easier when there are a bunch of bottles available that people want to try. It’s less easy if you walk in and the list hasn’t changed much in several weeks. Time of day and day of the week varies. Weekends are always easier, in my opinion. It’s a lot like getting chicken from Popeyes. You want to go during rush hour.

Easiest during an event/special week/day but it's rather natural so just offer and enjoy!

Post in this thread next year as you’re getting close. People will probably take you up on it. Lots of BA meetups happen at SP this way. Other BAs are often down to split a bottle if they know someone else wants to, since the beer is great, even if they weren’t planning to go and buy that beer anyway. Hard to turn down a 1/3 or 1/4 bottle pour at cost when you get to meet 1 or more fellow BAs. Despite our quarrels, few BAs are assholes. We just play one online.

I can do that. We already have an Airbnb booked and have every intention to be there provided no wacky life/world/universe events happen. Never been but really looking forward to it!

Anyone going to Fermier Day and want to split some bottles on-site? I’ll probably be getting there around 2pm.
