Maybe it’s better suited in the Eisbock category?

I hear ya, and you’re not wrong. But I also understand where @Providence is coming from, that’s all. There’s statistical evidence showing ABV’s have trended upwards over the years.

And to be fair, I am going to seek a single or two of the Ultimate Oktoberfest out, and I also had a bourbon barrel aged Oktoberfest at Sam Adams last year too. So it’s not as if I completely abstain and object to beers like this.

Because it’s a message board and I didn’t put much thought into it.

I don’t wish it’s existence away. I hope everyone who buys it absolutely loves it. I’m not likely to buy it as I prefer to have lower abv beers.

It definitely seems like Euro Strong Lager would be the appropriate category. Definitely doesn't fit in the Weisn/Festbier category

There's no freezing process going on, so maybe just the Doppelbock category?

Samichlaus is 14% and was slotted into Doppelbock.

Then again, the brewery has gone and labeled the thing Märzen, so...

    Oh yeah good point.

Yeah Doppelbock was my other thought.

Also just noticed that two of the top ten amber Oktoberfests on Beeradvocate are from Tree House. And on Untappd one of the Tree House amber Oktoberfests (one is a regular Oktoberfest, the other is conditioned on oak) is number one.

Now, I've had Tree House lagers, and they are good. But man, do people rating beer have to be so predictable?

    HIGH ABV or TREE HOUSE!!!

It's almost as if people have a preset idea of what "good" is before even drinking a beer...

I don't know about "better" but sometimes BA posts remind me of a Monty Python skit. :flushed:

    Cheers!

Well, regarding Tree House, I've had theirs (at least the normal one, not sure about the oak aged).

There's nothing over the top about it, it's just a regular amber Oktoberfest. And again, nothing wrong with it, it's just that people seem to automatically see "Tree House" and then rate it highly.

Bahaha. Well they must have a TON of brewery staff...actually that would make sense given they produce the third most amount of beer in MA next to Sam and Harpoon...and ALL beer is sold on-site.

It's truly an impressive operation where you buy cans. A conveyor belt just pumping out case after case for hours on end to their customers. Hordes of people every day getting in line and stacking case after case on a dolly and taking them to their cars.

    Multiple IPLs.

Seriously though, how wide is their distribution? To me it's curious that they have so many ticks.

Zero distribution. They are an absolute freak in the brewing industry. Go look at their dedicated thread in the northeast forum. Its got to be near the longest single brewery threads and when I've checked it in the past it's just post after post of people asking questions about the various procedures for acquiring their beer, talking about the case(s) of beer they bought, or sharing their thoughts on the beer. I've never had their beer but their reputation is such that I would absolutely not miss an opportunity to try their beer if I was in the area

Local brewery here does a BBA marzen every year and it's just too much. The beauty of Marzens is packing all those bready and caramel notes into a beer that's substantial yet refreshing and not cloying. doubling the AVB and adding bourbon just creates a big sticky mess I don't want to drink more than 4oz of at a time

Haven’t spotted it here in northern VA either, unfortunately. Fingers crossed I find it on the shelves soon.
