You could always cheat the system and say you got two beers by bringing just the Pilsner. You're technically offering a Pilsner and a lager.

Report back if you make it, anybody for that matter on here that does go.

I'm debating it. Notch is my usual on a Friday. Not sure I really want to trek north even for an early opening on day two of public open for them. I have a potential trip up that way later in the month that will likely be a better fit and hopefully a bit more relaxed once the dust settles.

Pilsner Urquell seems like a very odd choice for one of 2 packaged beer options

Why? I’d imagine you can drink that on site and it is the example of Czech pale lager.

Food prices are more reasonable than the initial draft menu . Assuming maybe some things will be added once they get rolling since the draft menu had a few more things, since it's kind of a short menu for a place that is a full service restaurant. It's unusual nowadays for a place to have no vegetarian or vegan meal option, since a lot of families or groups of friends will have one amongst them.

But I'd certainly give it a shot next time I'm in Maine, I am a fan of a tasty dark lager and casual but good food.

Well it just seems to me that the proposition they're putting forward is that Czech style pale and dark lagers are best enjoyed in the tank pub setting, and specifically that the serving style is what really elevates the beers. So to then offer a bottled version of the style as one of two packaged beer options just seems odd. Aren't I going there to drink their Czech Pale Lager served direct from the tank? What's the value proposition of the PU in that setting?

also, just the baseline of having 4 beer options and 2 of them are one style. Seems odd to me.

Doesn’t seem odd to me. Feature their beers on their system, offer alternatives in another format, can not bottle on the urquell btw. Yes, same style, but the example of the style.

There is rarely value in any packaged beer at a bar/restaurant.

Of course, I get that PU is an inspiration behind their approach. I just don't understand who the intended customer is for a can of it at a place where the sales pitch for the beer is essentially; Pilsner Urquell served the way it's intended instead of packaged and shipped across the world.

Yeah sounds like a cool spot, and that food menu looks fantastic. I'll have a hard time not checking it out this weekend.

Allan has mentioned that she does not want to appropriate Czech beer culture and more or less wants to avoid Czech beer terminology. I think it's safe to assume that this name choice is related to that. Note that their menu lists the two beers as simply "pale lager" and "dark lager"... and that the pours are "classic," "half pour" and "foam." I believe that this is not just a marketing choice to make things less alien to US customers. She claimed that Czech brewers stated that she shouldn't claim her beer is "Czech beer"... because it isn't. She hasn't really followed that, but the naming convention on the menu is a nod to that.

Personally, I find this thought process to be a breath of fresh air in the craft space. Craft beer culture has been exactly the opposite - with brewers using anything from other cultures that they think they can market. Exoticism and fake authenticity seem to be key components of US craft marketing. (That and puns on the word Gose.) I don't think this convention is without merit, but I do wish that brewers would at least express SOME hesitancy to go down that road. It's nice to see it when it rarely pops up.

In Allan's case, is it contradictory to claim that she doesn't want to appropriate Czech culture while she's helping to create a business that does exactly that? Um, yeah. A rose by any other name is still a "pale lager." A central idea of the entire venture is that these people have gone over there to learn, buy, and recreate essentially the same thing over here (when it comes to the beer). Not only is this key to the marketing, but the narrative is even pushing the idea that it's groundbreaking... and that they'll do it better than the brewers over there. (That last bit is a real turn off.)

This contradiction is seen by her and she can wrestle with it. I find her to be quite contradictory in interviews in general, but I don't mean that in an overly critical way. It always seems like it's a result of introspection in her case... and that's something that's great and rare to see. Frankly, it's hard to imagine most brewers even caring about such issues. I don't want to suggest that her voice is the entire voice of the project, but it's the main voice I've been listening to in the media.

Yeah, generally I agree. (Well, except "lager", of course, is a German word and "pub", short for "public house", is a whole lot more British than American. They've just been around longer.)

I just don't like the sound of "Tank Pub" (I can be contradictory on occasion, too - it was good enough for ol' Uncle Walt from Camden.)

Yeah, that's another thing. Is beer served direct from tanks really "the first in this country"? Didn't many early brewpubs do that, and still do?

I think that it's the specific LUKR tank set up that they have which they are referring to.
