Pick Six: Dan Carey Shares a Six-Pack from the Wayback | Craft Beer & Brewing (beerandbrewing.com)

    ---
The highly respected brewmaster from Wisconsin’s New Glarus guides us through six monumental beers that always lead to disappointment—because, inevitably, your glass is empty too soon...These beers are from brewers I admire. Some are here because of fond memories. All have that elusive combination: a perfect marriage of drinkability and complexity. It’s relatively simple to brew a beer for easy drinking, or even one with big flavors, but to have both is a different matter altogether. I strive to brew such beers, so I appreciate that moment when I taste one

Dan Carey summed it up perfectly there IMO.

I noted his verbiage discussing Timothy Taylor Landlord (with emphasis in bold by me):

“This beer is a perfect combination of Golden Promise barley and whole-cone Golding and Fuggles hops, skillfully blended with that iconic Yorkshire yeast character.”

I am of the strong opinion that the Timothy Taylor yeast strain (available as Wyeast 1469) when fermented warm provides the ideal combination of “drinkability and complexity” to Bitter Ales; it is my choice when I homebrew my annual batch of Bitter Ale.

    Cheers!

There's so much to like in that article. I think my favorite passage was the comparison of PtE to Pilsner Urquell, which I think is spot on. The first time I enjoyed both of those beers was a "Holy Shiznit" moment that altered the way I looked at beer.

I also like the beer nerds line ("Beer nerds should have more respect for the classics—the OGs") a little bit because I agree about the OG's and a lot because I prefer the term "beer nerd" to "beer geek" - by miles and miles and miles.

"So really, in my mind I think of both of these terms differently. They aren’t interchangeable as many people think, and they both have a distinct place on the evolutionary ladder. The Geek is a little ahead of the Nerd in his progression, but can be afflicted by the Beerdouchecus at times. Where the Nerd is a fun loving drinker of beer that wants others to love beer as much as he does."

That last line sums up my beer nerdery perfectly. Beer should ALWAYS be fun, IMHO.

Isn't this a copy/paste of the next to last paragraph from https://beerandwhiskeybros.com/2010/12/27/getting-our-terminology-straight-beer-geek-v-beer-nerd/ ?

It's such a great beer. I absolutely love it. How does your homebrew compare to the real deal?

Similar yeast produced flavor profile: esters like stone fruit flavors.

I prefer to use floor malted Maris Otter Pale Malt so the malt profile is different. I do utilize East Kent Goldings so the hop flavor is similar.

    Cheers!

There’s a brewery near me headed up by a brewer loves Timothy Taylor’s. His best cask ale is modeled after Boltmaker, and it’s made me a huge fan of Timothy Taylor’s before I’ve even taking my first sip

Timothy Taylor Landlord is indeed a tasty beer when you can find it fresh (which is only a handful of times over multiple decades for me).

    Cheers!

Had TTL often in Yorkshire recently. It is a fine pint on Cask.

Golden Promise (Simpsons IIRC) and Styrian Goldings, Goldings, Fuggles.

I like all 6 of those...although is Bridgeport IPA even still a thing? I know the brewery itself closed, but is someone else still contracting brewing something under that name?

Bridgeport is long gone but that was of my favorites when I first got into craft beer, growing up in Oregon.
