On Friday I'll be making a large purchase of beer both for cellaring and drinking. I'm looking to pick up some holiday or good winter beers. I'm in the mood for something strong and hearty, like porters, stouts, Scotch ales, barley wines, Christmas ales etc.
I currently have my eyes on some Founders Dirty Bastard and Breakfast Stout, but I'm also open to suggestions. I'm looking to mainly for Michigan beers but I'd be open to non-Michigans too.
Basically I'm looking for good suggestions/recommendations for things I've never had/heard of before. Also if you know that certain beers are located as certain stores that would be helpful too. Thanks.

Whereabouts do you buy these? I haven't seen too much Shorts variety on the eastside and Rochester areas where I usually get my stuff.

Short's seasonal beers should be easily found at any good beer store, and their year-round beers at most supermarkets that carry craft beers. The Woodmaster is just hitting store shelves now so you may want to ask about it if you don't see it.

All of the suggestions above are great, and to add others: Arcadia's Shipwreck Porter (it's bourbon barrel aged) is supposed to be on store shelves now, and Arcadia also makes a tasty Loch Down Scotch Ale and a London Porter. Their Imperial Stout was also just released. You can probably also find their Cereal Killer Barleywine too, and that is my favorite BW.

You might get lucky and find some Founders Backwoods Bastard too (it's also bourbon barrel aged).

The Red Wagon is supposed to be very good.

Just got a bottle of Shipwrecked! What brand is the Cereal Killer? That sounds really intriguing.
    Thanks for all the help!

For such a big player, Bell's is very understated and their Third Coast Old Ale (not to be confused with Third Coast Lager, which is pretty everday) is overlooked, potent, and fantastic. New Holland Pilgrims Dole is a wheatwine I like a lot. Dragons Milk too, although it's not for everyone and seems to let down people expecting a huge, bourbony stout.

Although they are from Ohio, Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, as well as their Christmas Ale are both very good. Also Dark Horse Perkulator, which is a coffee dopplebock.

Don't age breakfast stout, loses its luster...still trying to get through my experiment 8 pack from last year.

Dragons milk is awesome, get the 4 pack vs bomber

Saw tons of backwoods in kzoo so it's still out there... Good luck man

Michigan is a great beer state, being from Ohio, I really enjoy the region and the breweries within Ohio, Michigan & Pennsylvania. Always on the hunt for things I have yet to have from any of the 3 states.

Hophead, your post from Friday may just be coincidental with the release of the BBA version at the brewery last night, but are you talking about the regular Cereal Killer, or the BBA version? The regular is an excellent barleywine, but the BBA version is fantastic.

Did the BBA Cereal Killer get bottled and is it going to be distributed? I've been waiting for this since October when I thought it would be released

It's on tap at Arcadia as of yesterday, and in bottles brewery only starting Christmas Eve. So I would think its still a few weeks out as far as distro.

The bottles of BBA Cereal Killer became available last night in addition to it being on tap. The BBA Imperial Stout is also available now in bottles. They didn't have the IS on tap last night as planned, but I'm going to try to go back there later today to see if they have it. The BBA Cereal Killer is a real 'killer' beer. I'll try to find out more about the distro.

I'm looking for Cereal Killer on the east-side of Mich, so any locations would be helpful. Also I picked up some New Hollands Wheat Wine, and 3rd Coast Old is one of my all-time favorites. I'm aging some right now.
