Saw Zombie Dust in the Stovepipe fridge for $4 the other day down in Salisbury MD. That’s a pretty sweet deal for a top rated IPA beer if fresh.

I too am stumped @bubseymour with the target or maybe it just "we have these cans to sell to stadiums, let's sell a few to distributors too...?"

Here is something that I haven't seen often except for Kane, they started canning their lagers in 19.2 oz four packs. I thought that was very different and it wouldn't appeal to me at all, even if I were interested in said beer.

I'm not sure if they do it anymore but I remember seeing it a bunch over the past few years. This could have been a result of the can shortage though and maybe they opted for 19.2 oz sticker cans rather than not canning at all if they lacked 16 oz blank cans.

PS...yes I would have purchased that zombie dust if it were fresh too @bubseymour the packaged ones here are usually older and warm.

Yeah I started a Golden Monkey thread a while back about how strange their Belgian Tripel in this current craft beer scene would be Victory’s top seller.

been using the ZD stovepipes for disc golf rounds. perfect, especially in the cooler weather when they won’t warm up too fast. have also used SN Torpedo and Hazy Little Thing stovepipes as well lately. love the format for that reason. not sure i would purchase otherwise though.

AT was in a mixed pack and did well so they went with the stovepipe format but I guess it didn't sell well, as it's already been discontinued (well not completely but is now one of their hard to get beers like Stout and it's been moved to their graveyard aka "Specialty, worth the search" on their site). If I had to guess the last batch went out in June, as around here I don't see any AT stovepipes past that date.

And both Golden and Sour Monkey can now be had in the 19.2 oz cans and I see them everywhere. Not my favorite beers but the good news is with these they age pretty well.

I suppose I am 'blind' to these beers since it the 19.2 oz format is not something I am personally interested in. Can you please provide some insight as to where you are seeing these beers?

I am aware there is a refrigerator in my local Wegmans near the cashiers for prepared food. While I have seen that refrigerator I have never taken the time to see what brands are in there. Do you happen to know how those beers are priced? How do they compare to the price for a single 16 ounce can (those are $4 if my memory serves me correctly).

    Cheers!

P.S. I very rarely look at the refrigerators for singles of 16 ounce cans since that is not a preferred format for me either. I prefer six-packs/12 ounces.

Off premise beer sale trends over the last few years of the previous decade (2017-2019) were shifting sales from stand alone liquor stores and convenience stores to grocery and big box (Wal Mart / Target / Costco type stores). The impact of The Rona the past nearly three years have exacerbated these off premise sale trends, with grocery and big box stores capturing this segment for a large portion of the population looking for a one stop shopping experience.

The stovepipe format targets people hitting stores for a few one off quick purchases, perhaps an after work to go meal or picking up a few one offs at a Walgreens grab one of these to go beers for their evening. Also see these targeting commuters at the local Metra train stations (liquor is allowable on these suburban focused trains beyond a few high demand weekends).

I target one beer per day at home, beyond bar or brewery outings, and prefer a 16 oz (or even a 19.2 oz can) to a 12 oz cans on these days beyond BA very high 12% + ABV beers.

When stovepipes were priced $1.99/$2.29, they were attractive to me, but they shot up to the $2.99-$3.29-$3.99 regular price range post currency devaluation over the past two years. Most are national brands, with Goose Island Beer Hug line vs. Revolution's Anti-Hero the two local examples. Breweries need to purchase a truck load of 19.2 oz cans to qualify for can shipments, so this format is and will continue to be limited to the top key brands within portfolios of the Top 50 breweries.

Surely! All of the Giant's (not sure about the KOP one but all of the others I have been in carry both GM/SM and others), Wegmans (and exactly where you said, the fridge by the cash registers in the old beer/café section and the KOP one has a nice selection of 19.2 oz cans including fresh Jai Alai, Stone IPA, DFH 60/90 Min...), Royal Farms gas station in Norristown, Whole Foods, McCafferty's Food Market, ShopRite...

$4.00 is a good average for many but most are cheaper and $3.00-$3.50, so a better deal than the single 16 oz cans which are $5 at Wegmans now ($16.99 for four).

The stovepipes are like the "reverse 500ML"... a "weird" format that is priced reasonably well vs 500ML (cough... Maine Brewing... cough)

Yeah, this is how the math works on most options around here so I've been buying them more and more. I noticed some new Second Fiddle in this format last week. Fresh, delicious and cheap.

True, but it is not just a subset of southerners. It's called "now you can have a good big beer and a buzz at once". This is more human than regional in my opinion.

Could be but I have only heard about this from the southern region perspective, so far.

Maybe some BAs from the non-south will post about the popularity of big format/high ABV in their regions.

    Cheers!

I like the 19.2 oz format. Sometimes I want more than a single or a pint but don't want a 4 or 6pk. Also prefer that size 6% ABV or less.

I must be living under a rock as I have not seen these. I prefer 12 oz. and sometimes pick up 16 oz. cans only if I really want the beer and it is not available in 12 oz. I would not be interested in this new format.

I’ll grab the occasional New Trail beer in the stovepipe cans. Double Broken Heels at $2.99 is a great deal if I’m in the mood for 1 strong beer.

Interesting. I wonder how closely we can parse these drinking habits and manners.......Sounds to me like a sociology assignment for a term paper. I like the good big beers and pick up the empties of Bud Lite ejected along the local twisting roads.

I like them. Price is not good in most spots so I only buy at one place. $2.99 Fiddle head and Spacedust. A few other are $3.25. Too many places have these at 3.99 and up. I saw lots of good beer in this size for under $2 in TN last spring.

    Enjoy

I’ve had the Voodoo Ranger Imperial IPA, DFH 90 Min, and Sixpoint Resin all in this format. Needless to say that was a “one-beer-night” for each of them:grimacing:

That is true, because that is the only victory beer still on the shelves down here. My son's friend brought a 4 pack over one night and I said I didn't know you like Belgians and the replied, no I like the abv
