In terms of color, it definitely falls in line with Bigfoot and Old Guardian. So tasty though!

Going with GI's Black Eagle barleywine instead of another wheatwine. Padres just scored 4. Ooops. Fascinating story behind this one. Part hoppy stock ale with brettanomyces aged in an oak barrel steamed to have most of its its flavor removed. A different, less hoppy recipe was then blended in.

This is quite different from what barleywine has become in this country. The ABV is far lower than average for today at 8.6% and the flavor profile is quite a departure from what's on the shelves. Nose is musty apricots, caramel, cinnamon, and ginger. This tastes sweeter than the smell suggests. The apricot is milder and the caramel more potent. I don't really taste the spices I smelled but there is something tea like plus some dry, leafy hops. Tasted blind I would not have identified this as a barleywine. It kind of reminds me of a Brett beer from de Proef. This is a wonderful departure from the barreled booze bombs I love so much and I am enjoying the hell out of this. Day in and day out though, I prefer what barleywine is in this country today. Thanks @FBarber for the tasty history lesson.

Goose Island and Wimbledon Brewery were trying to recreate what barleywine was circa 1960, Brett and all. I can't say if they succeeded or not, but barleywine was absolutely their intent.

Nice! I get to try one of those courtesy of @arizcards , I'm thinking of posting the top half of the pic here and the bottom half on the imperial stout thread. @Resistance88 would that be allowed?

    Pfft!

You don't need his permission. But be careful posting there! It may not be "pure" enough for him and he'll give you shit for it! I made one post there and he gave me shit over it, and kept on doing for a little while. I refuse to participate (post beer pics) in that thread!

    ¡No más, Tomás!

Oh damn this absolutely lives up to its reputation. Nothing unfamiliar in a barleywine here but there is a lot going on and everything is so BIG. 2-4 years in barrels adds such a layer of... profundity to the already stellar Straight Jacket. I feel underdressed, semi-literate, and unwashed sipping on this.

Raisins, molasses, high end whiskey, and leather dominate. There is a lot more at the edges though, candied nuts, honey, pipe tobacco, and a hell of a lot more. Such enveloping, deep warmth but not at all hot. People with access to Revolution are lucky indeed.

Liquid Loves' B.A. Jean Sleeper, BA English Barleywine. It's a bit raw. Notes of caramel, bourbon and some stewed fruit. I say that because as a wee child if I got a fever my Mom would concoct something made from cooked fruits and Dad added some Christian Brothers brandy. This beer brought back that memory...........now they'd be arrested, go to jail.....enjoy what's in yer glass......

Dan @DIM, i too was struggling with approach after reading the description. Hopefully will check it out sometime next month after our trip to D.C. By then perhaps Tomas @Resistance88 will have rendered an opinion.

Sounds like what one would expect from a beer with that reputation! Revolution is killing it, that's for sure. Cheers!
