Going old school tonight, Bigfoot is always a good idea.

Still a fair amount of aspirin and grapefruit rind after almost 8 years, but the incredibly smooth caramel and toffee dominate. Sooooooo damn good.

I have a bottle of the same vintage. Aspirin and grapefruit

    I'll let it sit longer.

I was recently at a tasting where a beer had notes of solvent, nail polish, baby diaper, and cheese. It was fantastic! :astonished:

Ha! Yeah if you threw everything in a blender that was used to describe most beers the result would be pretty nauseating.

Gasthausbrauerei Talschänke. Unfortunately, they closed down during COVID times. By far the best I've ever had.

This one has some serious cred - first brewed for Queen Elizabeth’s 1953 coronation - gold medal winner in 1968 (maybe the equiv of todays CAMRA champion beer of Britain?). Consumed at the Royal Oak over the weekend near London’s Borough Market south of the Thames. On the low end of the style abv scale - but full bodied with clean/sweet toffee/caramel flavors as expected. Didn’t catch the age but I think it was brewed very recently. Enjoyed it after a Harvey’s dark mild on cask.

This and Tree House’s Tree of Light are the best barleywines I’ve ever had. Straight Jacket and Sucaba aren’t far down the list

This and Kane's Double Double Cask and Stacking Casks 8 are the best I've had in recent memory.

Strikes me more as a scotch ale, maybe even a porter. But a meh one.

Enjoying the presumably barrel aged version of an English Barleywine (Irish Walker) called Appalachian Walker. Aged in brandy barrels, the base beer that was 10.14 abv clocks out at 12.04 abv. The Irish Walker base beer is very dark fruit forward with enough hopping to balance things nicely. The brandy barrels lend a nice red wine flavor and the oak balances very nicely. Very smooth, a nice easy sipper on this fall afternoon that is well worth the smaller price tag.
    Cheers!

Bissel Brothers Betwixt and Between with coffee, aged 17 months in Buffalo Trace barrels.

Up front this is basically a really nice barrel aged barleywine. I get lots of toffee with some well incorporated smooth bourbon, there is a little roasty char as well. Towards the middle vanilla chimes in before the coffee kicks in more strongly at the finish. It doesn't overpower the base barleywine and it all gels together well. The exhale reminds me of mellow cold brew. As it warms this really starts to shine.

A special barleywine tonight, compliments of @DIM . Three Floyds BA Behemoth.

Poured at fridge temp into my Thomas Hardy's glass. Pours a very murky light brown with minimal head. Lighter than I would have expected.

The nose is just wonderful. The classic clash of hops and malts, with some barrel kicking in. Big toffee notes, bourbon, and a kiss of citrus peel. A bit of leather, pine, oak, raisins, figs, bread, and a hint of lemon.

The taste is equally wonderful, and it closely aligns with the nose. Again, a mix of toffee, bourbon, grapefruit peel, earthy bitterness, oak, figs, a slight nutty note, raisins, apricots, a hint of brown sugar, and a slight hint of banana. Very enjoyable.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a mix of sweet and bitter on the aftertaste. Fairly low carbonation. The ABV is surprisingly hidden on this. Overall, a fantastic example of an American barleywine in barrels. Thanks for sending, Dan!

    Yes it was...

I'm distraught, Kane has halted shipping for now. I hope they start again one day. I only got the one delivery and it was spectacular.

Glad you liked Behemoth, I hope I can get another case in the next couple of months. Welcome home!
