From what I’ve seen, the two breweries are friendly with each other. Back when the Raptors and Cavs were in the playoffs against each other, they had some kind of friendly wager. I don’t remember the details, but it was all in good fun.

Both breweries are similar too. Lots of good solid traditional beers.

I’m surprised they’ve never made a collaboration beer together.

I wasn't blown away by Very Hhhazyyy last night. The Greenest Green, however, does not disappoint!

This is beyond juicy. There are slight herbal ("green") accents that provide depth, but this is all about lush notes of papaya, melon, mango, and tangerine.

4.35 / -4.4% (overall rating was hurt by a rather pedestrian aroma - pleasant, but not a standout)

Maybe they could label that collaborative beer: Great Lakes's beer? :stuck_out_tongue:

    Time for a fav style.

Interesting to see Denizen make some of these beers in their Hike The Alps series. Tried 2 already a previous Keller, and now this one.

Poured from the bottle into a branded Schlenkerla becker nonic pint glass.

Creamy off white with a real nice fluffy topped head. Flirts with khaki color and a rolling hill like top with no lacing. Pretty good retention on this, sitting on a real nice amber copper orange body. Real nice clarity and visible very fine carbonation. A real impressive looking and aggressive looking for a rauch.

The aroma sticks to the classics. Clean with a nice smokey flavor and less hints of caramel sweetness. Good amounts of wood and campfire like embers in quality, but nothing overkill or anything larger. Not so much emphasis on sweetness or bakery thick malt qualities however, but is definitely in the right ballpark style wise.

Palate continues the goods. Clean finishing, with a bit more mineral and touching of herbal bite in the mid palate. Smokey but not meaty or mealy either but with a faint caramel touch. Finishes quite mineral and even rocky sharp, with a good herbal bitterness as well. Simple bodied but plenty enough to support the flavors on the palate.

This is a nicely dialed in rauch which does come off like the classics but has more of a mineral and bitter quality. It's still quite delicious.

    Final score: 4.02

    Cheers!

As far as I can tell, it only has distro in Chicago/Northern Illinois. I picked it up at Binny's (a magnificent chain of beverage stores in the greater Chicagoland area) a couple of weeks ago. There's a significant story behind this brewery (from their website) .....

"Conrad Seipp, an immigrant from Hessen Germany, started making beer in Chicago in 1854. His brewery was one of the few to survive the Chicago fire. During “The Great Rebuilding,” a period of intense innovation in urban development, business and architecture, Seipp provided Chicago his beer. By the mid-1870s, Seipp was a dominant player in the Chicago and national beer market, producing over 250,000 barrels annually. In his prime, Seipp was a pioneer of modern brewing. His innovations included new techniques in refrigeration, distribution, and marketing. Conrad Seipp died in 1890 and members of his family continued to run the company. Grain and coal shortages during World War I impacted Seipp’s production before the enactment of Prohibition in 1919 devastated the beer industry. Seipp operations shut down in 1933, just before Prohibition was lifted. The brewery was destroyed that year to make room for Michael Reese Hospital.

Seipp’s direct descendant has brought back the Conrad Seipp Brewing Company and in collaboration with Metropolitan Brewing is recrafting Seipp’s historic brands which include Seipp’s Extra Pale (a pre-prohibition pilsner) and Seipp’s Columbia (a dark lager first introduced at the Columbian Exposition of 1893). Seipp’s beer is about connecting with the past while enjoying the present."

The Metropolitan Brewing referenced is one of a few Chicago breweries focused on lagers (Dovetail and Goldfinger being the most prominent). I've been to Dovetail and Goldfinger and love them both. Metropolitan is next on my list.

I did visit the website a few minutes ago and read the "About" tab and it is indeed a very cool story.

I have been corresponding with Doug Piper (he produces video podcasts on a variety of beer topics, I would encourage you to visit his Youtube channel) on the topic of Classic American Pilsners (Pre-Prohibition Pilsners). I sent him an e-mail 15 minutes ago with information about Seipp's Extra Pale. On the brewery's website they have a really neat illustration of the old time bottles and the contemporary beer:

This is a very special beer that came through the generosity of the BIF that supports this thread. It was graciously sent my way by @Coronaeus. It is special one because of that but it is a once in a beertime sort of beer for me. I have always been drawn to the north, I'm not really sure why but its been for as long as I can remember. This beer contains flowers in it from the Arctic Circle, the heart of the north. Such a cool feeling to know that in some way I'm consuming something that was hand picked in a place where so few living things can survive, and yet they do survive against all odds. Spiritually it is kind of neat to imbibe something that contains a trace of one of those few living, and beautiful things, I'm humbled to be able to try this beer. Here is a picture that was shared from this brewery's social page while the flowers were being foraged...

*This saison is made with paunnat, a flower that grows in Nunavut, creating a beautiful purple hue amidst the rich greens, browns and whites on the tundra.

Red Tape - Paunnat Saison (6.1% saison)

A beautiful darker orangey gold color, very clear, pure white head with visible carbonation on the pour. Swirling the glass around brings back a beautiful thick sheet of white.

The nose is reminiscent of hefeweizen esters to me; some bubble gum, minor clove, touch of refreshing citrus, and sweet earthy floral; a beautifully aromatic beer.

Earthy bubble gum is the first thing that hits the tongue; followed by spices, and actually a little bit of bread like malt. There is an grassy earthy sort of finish to it.

Medium body; carbonation that reminds me of Belgian beers but a little creamier, minor sweetness and a grassy low bitterness on the finish that lingers for quite some time. It has a very pleasant almost warming sensation on the palette and gut; makes my tummy and face smile.

Oh remember the “it tastes like beer story” from my previous post…

16oz can purchased at the Mills River gift shop stamped 091922C poured into a tulip pint glass at fridge temp 7.8% ABV 30 IBU per can label. The beer pours opaque dark brown with hints of ruby around the edges and light brown head. The head recedes to a thin ring and island of tiny bubbles. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring almond and coconut over dark chocolate. The taste is semisweet toasted coconut and almond over a caramel & chocolate malt base. Not much in the way of hop flavor, although there is moderate bitterness on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with average carbonation and a semi dry finish. Overall, well crafted and a dead on Almond Joy in a can experience.

Unfortunately, I'm not an coconut fan, so I didn't personally love this beer...

    Cheers all!

This is a lusciously juicy beast! It's all tropical, all the way: melon, papaya, banana, mango. Low expressed bitterness, and little in the way of balancing herbal or citrus notes. That is not in any way a criticism.

When I was over there, the embassy "expeditor" picked us up at the plane, expedited customs, gave us each a case of water, and said to drink nothing but unopened water, pop, or beer, so we didn't get amoeba. So we had the choice of water, non-diet coke, Heineken, or regional beers. I despise Heineken, so I drank regional beer. They were good in the moment, just like Dinty Moore stew is incredible only when camping.

I’m glad you enjoyed it and your post is fantastic. Also, fyi, Sarabeth, who picked the flowers, is from Nunavut and owns this little nano-brewery, delivered the beer to my front door! So you might say, she was involved in the transportation of that beer to you!

I haven’t had my can yet. Sadly, I haven’t had a beer in over a week due to the COVID. The can stares at me every time I open the fridge door… Soon, soon.

Also, as soon as I’m better, I’ll be sending a couple more of these out to NBW BIF players to spread a little slice of Nunavut around.

    Cheers!

    6.5% AIPA from Russian River

Poured from the pint+ bottle, the body is a light orange with fluffy head. Light lacing throughout the tasting.

The aroma is a delightful pineapple citrus with a touch of malt and pine.

The taste follows the nose and the citrus is dampened. The lightest of bitter bites arise. Super easy drinking. After the big aroma the more subtle taste is surprising but not unpleasant.

Light carbonation and a soft dry finish. Good mouthfeel.

Another gem, albeit inferior to my tastes than Pliny or Blind Pig, from Russian River.

[IMG] [IMG] Back today for a whiskey barrel aged Brown Ale from OddSide Ales.

Pours a cloudy deep amber with ruby hues in the light. A one finger mocha head of foam rises and recedes to a thing ring. Nose initially is all banana, biscuit, and nuts(pecans). Taste follows suit but reveals a delicious baked banana bread with nuts soaked in syrup and a very subtle whiskey burn. Interesting how OddSide manages to pack these flavors in. Feel is chewy and mouthcoating. Overall, well above average. 4/5 across the board. Cheers boys.
