I opened one a little over a month ago and posted it to the cellar review thread. They're tasting great right now and I don't see that changing anytime soon, so no rush. I also can't imagine it getting any better. Curious to hear your thoughts when you do open it.

Thank you, just found your post. I would love to have a second to let sit for 5 more years, but at $28 I just did want to buy a second at the time of purchase. Now I can't find them anymore

These came out before my beer buying went ridiculously ballistic so I only bought 3 and that was really big buy for me back then.

It'll be great no matter when you open it.

I believe I'll be opening it Thanksgiving morning and sipping on it the entire day. We're hosting, afterall. So I'll need to be pretty buzzed by 1pm at the latest

You and I were having a conversation about that some time ago. I saw Ken stating that Fritz adopted the government friendly term from him, but if the photos of Old Foghorn bottles on the web with "barleywine style" on the label supposedly from 1983 are actually from '83, then credit goes to Fritz. Ken also stated that when he bought Old Foghorn bottles in the late 70s(?) (the act of which led to Bigfoot) Anchor was only selling them out of the brewery at that time. (Would love to see a Foghorn bottle from the 70s.) Larry Bell has stated that Ken had a hard time getting "barleywine style" approved by the ATF (which caused him to not use the term). Gotta wonder when Old Foghorn first saw out of state distribution... or was it hard for these people to claim precedent for their label approval? I'm mostly ignorant to the realities here.

Don't have a source for this pic, but looks legit:

Also, there is this from the column "Mead on Wine" by Jerry Mead which appeared in a number of California papers:
(Of course, Old Foghorn, being well over 3.2% abw, would not have been legal in April 1933...)

In a March, 1986 interview for Will Anderson's From Beer to Eternity, Maytag said:
Sure, I remember. I just don't remember who (you, me, Fritz, Ken) said what or the final outcome. :astonished:

Ha, that's the same pic I was mainly using... but your news clipping really solidifies it. Apologies if you already shared that clipping and I forgot about it. That Fritz quote is in sync with the old () Anchor website which claims Old Foghorn was first brewed in '75 and bottled in '76.

@BMBCLT - Your avatar and name changes are making this conversation as difficult to sort out as this California beer history.:grin:

Yeah @BMBCLT what did the first set of letters mean and what does this new set mean?

Might be the wrong thread: I appreciate Anchorage ADWTD. I bit the bullets again for some “red” on Tavour. Today, they had a “full color” offering. I didn’t know they made different versions. At $100/bottle X 2 limit, they’re getting beyond greedy now? I don’t appreciate that!

Googling….there’s a silver, too? Da fuh? I’m not spending $600 on ADWTD this year!

They just released 4 "different" adwtd plus triple barrel Wendigo. I don't regret trying what I did from them but I am done with them after the Deal with Evil I have in the fridge.

Oh hell no. Yeah, I don’t mind one absurd spend, but 4 is beyond what I can justify. If I win the Powerball, well, I’ll buy some for you all too.

I think I “really really” have to be done with them after this. For that amount, I’ll look to trade for a boatload of 2017 GI BCBW.

    Cheers!

hmmm Now I want a barleywine.

I decided to clean out my last from Anchorage. Deal with Evil, blend of two double barrel barleywines, collaboration with Evil Twin.

Well this is a lot more interesting than a Deal With the Devil. Evil Twin's portion first spent 2 years in red wine barrels. That is a lot more time in oak than Anchorage typically uses and it really takes this in a different direction, I get a nice leathery note. I'm loving the chocolatey, oaky molasses that is coming through in a big way. There is more bourbon than wine but the vinous twang cuts the sweet nicely. This is definitely unique and comes together extremely well, I'm very glad to have tried this.

Poured an unspecified amount of bubbles with beer underneath. The underneath beer tasted like good things and not bad things. I found the goodness of the taste to be pleasing. Nothing was reminiscent of hot dogs outside of some shared letters. Amen.
