I hate getting burned on old beer. Was your beer refrigerated when you bought it?

Oh bugger. That kind of dating is like a Rube Goldberg machine. Wouldn't it be grand if the wonderful wide world of brewin' & containerizing could settle on having a universal international date code? Either manufactured date or enjoy by date...or both. My most recent purchase of Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout was dandy. Beer tasted excellent, clean bottles, superb in every way. On a side note, when I buy beer from a "small" beer store I avoid imports as they are commonly older than the hills. Cheers!

    No.

And it just bugs me that some distros use certain stores as "clearing houses" for their old stock.

I used to know the liquor manager at this store, but he moved on. If I ever figure out who to corner, I will and point it out.

For imports, I feel like that's as fresh as they come!

In the interim I refuse to purchase beer that is not dated (or dated such that I can't understand it when I pick it up at the beer retailer).

Permit me to relate a story: I attended a beer festival in Philadelphia this past summer. There was a booth from New Trail Brewing Company. The beer(s) I drank from them were very good. I chatted with an employee from New Trail that was manning the booth and I mentioned that I never buy their beers since they refuse to date their beers. He was a bit taken aback to here me say this and a couple of minutes later volunteered that they have no problems 'selling out' their beer inventory. I replied to him that they would get my money if they chose to date their beers as well. I suppose since other customers robustly buy their products they see no incentive to date their beers? From my perspective included dates would be an ethical business practice but...

As long as beer consumers are willing to buy beers with no dates (or secret codes) I suppose some breweries will continue on in this manner.

Cheers to breweries that have the ethics to date their beers using non-secret codes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:beers:

Weird that the first letter (S) and last number (1) are ignored. . .

Maybe they are for a separate secret message? Like: Be sure to drink your Ovaltine.

Message being, you're beer is old. Btw, Ralphie's house is up for sale here in the CLE...quite the little cottage industry they have going on over there around the holidays.

This happens in other industries as well. In my line of work sealed lead acid batteries are dated similarly where no manufacturer is the same and you have to go to their website to decipher, so do you want me to charge you the labor to figure that out or just charge you for fresh batteries and move on...product is cheaper than the labor.

Wow. From Sam Smith to fra-gee-lay. It's amazing how fast animated gifs can derail a thread.

It sucks because they make excellent beer. But not worth the price without knowing. The cans are better but not as charming

I love many imported beers, but for the reason of supply chain issues, I tend to stick to local beers. Plus, I like to support the small(er) local breweries when I can. Drink local! :sunglasses:
