I always feel as if I'm missing something when I see these breweries that also offer some sort of special coffee as well. When I lived in Sacto years ago, we had access to Peet's, Starbucks and of course Java City (among other things), and I can't recall ever wishing that some new coffee conglomerate would come to town to elevate my coffee drinking experience (which I already felt was pretty darn good).

Is there really that much of an untapped coffee market in the Sacto area to justify this new coffee introduction?

I think it has to do with Mostra collaborating with a bunch of big stout breweries (like Bottle Logic and particular Moksa) in their beers. I don't find it odd that they would have Mostra coffee available, since Moksa beers are the most likely introduction point for Sac Area folks to those coffees to begin with.

Coffee is on a trajectory that's similar to craft beer. The market you're describing could be compared to the beer market in, say, 2000. Plenty of good options fairly accessible, many people surely figured there was more than enough good beer around and couldn't be room for more. The new wave of roasters have taken coffee further into the minutae; single origin beans, new post harvest processes to enhance different flavors, new methods of preparation and increased focused on the details of the preparation, and even small lot selection similar to elite wine grapes.

Did anyone really "need" it? No. But for a lot of people my age (mid 30s) and younger it's what we came of age with, just like excellent beer options, and it's our baseline. I often skip coffee if I'm not home and can't readily access something better than Peet's.

I'm generally aware of the new, heightened interest in coffee origins, terroir, etc. (and even went to a couple of "cuppings" at Stumptown roasters some years back), but didn't realize it was so wide spread. I also didn't realize there was anything comparable to the craft beer community, when it comes to coffee.

I appreciate being educated on the subject by you and @thuey.

We went and tried the coffee on early Saturday morning. They were still setting it up on first day. Only had the traditional type drinks (Americano, Espresso, Mocha, Latte). They didn't have the brewed drip coffee or Iced Coffee yet that day. They just had a few croissant choices. https://moksabarrelhouse.com/menu/coffee

My wife was thinking that they would not be successful unless they bring it more FLAVORed type drinks (Think SB caramel macchiato and Dutch Bros diabetes sugar drinks) for the local West Roseville Barbie types. The Dutch Bros and Starbucks around here have HUGE drive through lines most of the day/night.........lol...

I guess this will be an experiment if Roseville/Sac is ready for Mostra Coffee.

On the beer. They have many many handles for Moksa beers. https://moksabarrelhouse.com/menu/beer

Burgers was probably most popular. https://moksabarrelhouse.com/menu/food

Since it is close..... back for Beers this weekend at Moksa Barrel House (a.k.a. Hawksa). Big lunch crowds. Lot of kids. Probably more adults after dinner,

    Leather Drinking Shorts - Festbier
Pretty light and drinkable. I thought I remember it having more malt punch in past years?

Graining Out for the Gram - Hazy IPA. Collab with Movement Brewing in Rancho Cordova. One of their better single hazys. Nelson and HBC586 hops.

Hey guys! Heading into town this week/weekend for the California International Marathon. First and most important question. Breweries I have to visit in order of preference below:

    1. Urban Roots
    2. Track 7
    3. Fieldwork
    4. Drake's The Barn

Working with a shorter list because I will probably be cramming most of them in on Sunday. Anyways, any that I'm missing that you would suggest as a must-hit or ones on my list you think are totally skip-able?

2nd less important question. My brother and I are also big Chiefs fans and trying to find a bar to catch the game on Sunday. Any good spots with sunday ticket, a decent selection, & good/OK food? Looking at University of Beer as an option?

    Thanks in advance!

@bfields4 are you trying to stay mainly in Sac, or are suburbs/periphery fair game? I ask as I'd easily sub out Track 7 for Moksa. And if you head to one of Moksa's location you could hit Final Gravity where I'd expect the Chiefs game could be viewed. @theconductor any insight to share?

    I'd probably skip Drakes too.

I know it's in the burbs, but I would definitely consider a visit to Slice. It's on my "must visit" list any time I'm in Sacto.

Good luck! Do you have a specific goal? (I'm also going to be in Sac this weekend for CIM - but more to cheer on people. Already ran 3'ish marathons this year so didn't want another :slight_frown: - But my favorite Sac Area brewery is Slice, even though it's a bit out of the way. I'll be there Sat evening!)

Oh my brother’s the speedster. I’m more of a trail runner. I’ll try to keep up with him for a bit while he shoots for a sub 2:50 and blow up haha. Sounds like a couple of hits for Slice with @John_M too. Might have to sub Slice and Mosaka (thanks @jakecattleco ) for track 7 & Drakes. We should have a good bit of free time & a car. I get in on Thurs late, so we’ll have a few days, but probably do the lion’s share of the drinking post race.. not to say I haven’t tied a few on before a race once or twice, haha.

    thanks again everyone!

    Much appreciated,
    Ben

If you let us know which City or suburb you are staying in, that would help us give you better actual suggestions. Sacramento is actually getting very spread out. You could be looking at a 45 minute drive to some of the outer locations like Slice (Lincoln) or Moksa (Rocklin #1 or West Roseville #2).

Urban Roots and Fieldworks are right downtown. Those should be your top 2 IMO if you are in downtown Sac.

    ++++++

On a side note, KC Chiefs vs Bengals is not going to be on at a lot of places in Sacramento on Sunday during the 1pm - 4pm slot. Most places will have the local SF 49ers or LV Raiders on most TVs. You might be able to get some bigger sports bar to put 1 tv in the corner on Chiefs...haha...

@bfields4. Just so we're clear, @atomicpunk5151 is pulling your leg. Obviously, the chiefs game likely won't be the featured game on Fox or CBS, so you'll need to go to a sports bar to watch it, but that shouldn't be a problem. I lived in Sacto for 13 years (from 89 to 01), and the city had more than it's fair share of sports bars that had the NFL ticket. I'm pretty certain that's still the case today as well

I'd recommend the place I used to frequent (Bleachers near Sacramento st.), but they've long since gone belly up. Regardless, you shouldn't have any problem finding a sports bar showing the chiefs game that also happens to have a pretty decent draft selection. Have fun in Sacto!

And rightly so. Still... if @bfields4 is staying downtown, and Fieldworks and Urban Roots are just a stones throw away, I can see why it would make sense to go there. Their beer is quite good.

That being said, I always make it a point to visit Slice whenever I'm in town. It's worth the drive IMHO. And we don't get their stuff here in PDX.

Yeah, that is why I added the HAHA.... Tons of places have Sunday ticket... But, most TVs will be on the 49ers/Raiders.

There is even a KC Chiefs "Fan Club" in Sacramento if you search around a bit on FB and IG.

We're staying in West Sacramento about 4 miles from the capital/race finish line. I'm thinking we'll def try to get to Slice as an excuse to explore and the beer looks/sounds good. I certainly trust @John_M recommendations. He might not remember, but we met in Eugene about 7 or 8 years ago when I was getting my MBA at Oakshire's big beer release... Hellshire day.. I think. Urban Roots also is doing a post-race event with free beer so that's perfect. Fieldworks seems like an easy stop as well.

University of Beer's website advertises Sunday Ticket, so we'll probably just go with that. Tap list looks decent enough.

    Thanks again, everyone!

LOL! Now that you mention it, I do remember you (though I'm embarrassed that I needed your post to remind me of your visit back in my Eugene days). In any event, enjoy your time in Sacto. I fondly remember my days in Sacto, and have every confidence that you'll have a fun time during your long weekend out. IMHO, Sacto is very much underrated as a craft beer destination/outpost. Have fun!

I'm actually in West Sac. There are two smaller breweries here (Bike Dog and Jackrabbit) that might be convenient but they're certainly not close to being the best of the Sacramento area. Drake's is nice with fire pits, outdoor games, etc but is usually really crowded (although with the weather this weekend maybe less so?). They're a notch above the other two (and make a great pale ale called 1500) but overall I'd go with the other suggestions.

If you're into whiskey there's a place called Roco (in West Sacramento) that gets a pretty impressive selection. Just make sure to check the dates on any beer you look as I've seen some pretty old stuff before. The Nugget grocery store in West Sac also has a decent craft beer selection as well.
