Hopefully it'll be the same CBS. Not a cheaper/dumbed-down version. Bourbon barrels that previously held maple syrup. And not bourbon barrels + maple extract, just like they used in French Toast Bastard.

LOL, I just saw a large format bottle and multiple 4-packs of the old batches continuing to gather dust last week. They could sell them as a vertical set when the new ones show up.

The only founders beer I miss and the last founders beer I bought. I love Mosaic in a west coast ipa and this one punched well above its weight class.

I once gave a full 15 pack to home bum.

Same here. Theres a whole shelf full of CBS bombers that have been in the same spot for the past 3 years. At 24 bucks( the price there) they can eat shit

A grocery store by me still has 750ml Goose Island Madame Rose bottles sitting. $30. No WAY those move at that price.

Wish we could get Red's Rye here in some sort of packaged format. And I'd love to get those stovepipes of Centennial. That would become my immediate go-to. We do get the 4x16 but only Total Wine sells it. I will probably pass on most of their newer offerings though. I did not like Lizard of Koz at all when it first came out. Also didn't like French Toast Bastard, Nemesis and that other Bottle Shop Series beer that was some sort of cocktail beer. I think the last one I liked at all was Panther Cub and even that one had kind of an artificial taste to it.

As an old Founders Tap Room Server, CBS hasn't been made due to supply of the maple syrup barrels being hard to come by. To my knowledge an order was put in for more barrels but there weren't any to purchase. Until there are more there will be no CBS so enjoy it if you're lucky enough to still have some.

I assume that maple syrup barrels are a single use product for barrel aging beer, is that correct?

Do you happen to know what is done with the maple syrup barrels once they are emptied of beer?

    Cheers!

This was told to me later on by the rep at the time and I think also mentioned in this thread somewhere. Regardless, thanks for the input/inside scoop! :beers:

I'm still sitting on a bottle of the last release, to drink for a special occasion (since previous bottles have held up fairly well).

Im not entirely sure what happens to them. I know Bardstown Bourbon Company took some KBS barrels and then aged some bourbon in them that was fantastic. It was like a bourbon inception. Washed it down with a little KBS as well and it was quite the experience.

Well, that is an interesting journey for the barrel: bourbon -> beer -> bourbon (again).

Technically a whiskey can not be labeled as being a bourbon if it is aged in a used barrel:

"Bourbon barrels must be made of new, charred oak and may not be used more than once. After a bourbon barrel is emptied, it can be sold to be used for other things. The most common use for used bourbon barrels is to age Scotch whisky. The Scotch must be aged a minimum of three years in used bourbon barrels."

    And:

    "Bourbon Whiskey:
    • Must be made in the United States (can be any state)
    • Must be made of a mashbill that’s at least 51% corn grain
    • Must be distilled to no higher than 160 proof off the still
    • Must be aged in new unused charred oak containers
    • Must enter the oak container at no higher than 125 proof"
    Cheers!

What if it was bourbon BEFORE it went into the the second barrel? Wouldn't it still be bourbon if it met all those requirements before being aged a second time?

New Holland Brewing makes a Beer Barrel Bourbon, so I'd say if it's bourbon already from the first barrel, then the second barrel is just a flavoring source.

    You got me here. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Cheers!

P.S. For completeness I should state that I am not a member of the Bourbon Rules Committee.

Will definitely try to grab each of these except French Toast Bastard. Holy smokes was that beer sweet. It definitely tasted exactly like French Toast. But wow.

I'm legitimately shocked that Lizard of Koz is coming back. I still see bottles of that sitting around. What a horrid, horrid, beer.

The reality of it is, lines get blurred and rules get muddled just like beer. Beer producers realize that “bourbon” is a hot topic right now. Real Bourbon technically isn’t supposed to have added flavors either but we have Howlers Head, Bourbon Sippin’ Cream. The list goes on. It’s up to the drinker to decide what they will tolerate in their bourbon dram, again much like beer. I’m not sure you will see very many producers get shut down or have to change their names because they’re not following the standards to a tee. I would be surprised if they did anyways. Cheers.

This is a stellar lineup as far as I’m concerned. I look forward to this years Mothership series as well. Cheers.
