Mystery barleywine time! I will write this review and then reveal! Poured at fridge temp. Pours a light brown with a reddish tint. Minimal head.

The nose is RUM! Christmas spice as well. Spiced rum?? Cinnamon, nutmeg, a hint of toffee, and a nice malty bread note. No hops detected. Really interested and very different from anything I have had recently.

The taste matches the nose quite nicely, but with more sweetness and also a touch of bitter hops. I am definitely guessing this is aged in rum barrels. There is a strong spicy note, so I wouldn't be surprised if there is some rye barrel mixed in. Definitely no bourbon. Getting toffee, cinnamon, leather, a touch of clove oil, pumpkin spice, mint, citrus peel, pine, and a bit of raisin. I am thinking American barleywine as the bitterness is increasing with time. ABV seems to be around 10%

Really lovely! Thanks for sending this one, Dan!

Glad you like it! And congrats on meeting your running goal, that is absolutely amazing. I have a friend that does ultramarathon trail running and I just cannot imagine the dedication.

Here it is! I mostly definitely got the cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and citrus peel (pats himself on back), but totally missed the barrel aging. I thought rum, and it's bourbon. In fact, I thought NO bourbon. I think the other stuff just dominated (or I have no sense of taste!). I love Bigfoot so much, and I'm so happy to try this one. Thanks again, @DIM (my hookup for California beers!)!!

I was surprised when I saw you hadn't had this one, that just didn't seem right. I thought it would be fun to surprise you with one from your own backyard!:sunglasses:

Hell of a call naming each and everyone of the additives. Impressive!

This is definitely top notch. It’s pretty hot, though. Can’t wait to see what it’s like in 2+ years. As good as it is, l’d probably just buy Straight Jacket

Harveys is one of my favorite strong beer producers, but this particular beer was never one that clicked with me. Despite that, I realllly enjoyed this particular bottle. Maybe my previous bottles weren't in the best shape, or maybe it was just my mood. The layering that the bitterness brings to the table once again illustrates how undervalued hops are in our idea of what an English barley wine can be.

Fair State - life ain’t fair barleywine ale.

They call them empty calories, but I say you’re empty, and these are the greatest bunch of fucking calories that ever existed. Now let’s get out there and [angry Richard Nixon head jowls in a jar noise]!!!

Tonight's mystery barleywine from @Beersnake1 is a surprising kick in the palate.

From a 375ml corked 'n caged bottle I was expecting something sweet from Lost Abbey but nope. This is fuuuuuunky. Up front is brief toffee and raisin but then earthy underripe apricots and dry red wine take over. The finish is kind of a musty wood? I have a hard time with descriptors for beers like this. After I adjusted, I really started liking this, thanks Tim!

The reveal is a wild barley wine from Ale Apothecary! Very cool to have tried this! My wife appreciates sour beer, so I ended up giving her some. Grudgingly...

No review from you, have you had this?

I figured that one would be a bit of a surprise. A shop in Anaheim had one of these so I grabbed it and sent it along. He said he's sure he has another and will put it aside for me when he finds it! I'm going back in a week or so and will hopefully try this as well. Cheers!

Great brew here. Umami, wine barrel tannins, dark fruit, spice from the barrels, dry. Light to medium mouthfeel that actually fits this very well. This is impressive and unlike many barleywines I’ve had in the recent past.

Bound in Wood Vanilla from 2020. A bourbon barrel-aged barleywine coming in at 13% ABV. Picked this up in Germany this summer. Got the last can.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a dark and murky brown with little head. The nose is bourbon, toffee, vanilla, figs, and prunes.

The taste is great. Sweet bourbon, vanilla, leather, toffee, and booze. This definitely tastes like the ABV stated.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Quite boozy. The aftertaste is sweet bourbon.

It’s as sweet as I thought it would be, but a little better than expected. Wouldn’t want a 4 pack, or more than 12oz

I've never seen a waxed can like that. I really hope it’s a troll on the wax bottle trend. I wonder if they waxed the top of any cans by accident lol. Imagine trying to open that
