From VinePair. Now, I don't have any difficulty imagining sipping a stout in Hawaii, but maybe that's just me. At any rate, I need to get busy on this list. (Three so far. :slight_frown:)

Even with the exception for SD, another "Best of xxx by state" article falls prey to insufficient number of ratings for better beers. The cited stout for SD was declared best only because it has the most reviews, but it's not the best stout in SD at 3.61, or even the best stout from that brewery.

We have many much better stouts that just haven't gotten enough ratings. I believe the best stouts in SD have come from Covert Artisan Ales and Woodgrain Brewing. Short of getting SD BA's to weigh in, you'll never see our best beers in such articles.

I've had eight of them, though I haven't had the one that's supposedly best here.

I am personally not a fan of lists or ratings for that matter but I guessed NJs before I checked and it is the one that is listed. I think most people in NJ would guess the same one I did as well so in this case the list I think got our state correct. It is a beer that has been around for quite sometime too.

In fact just yesterday the purchasing info was released, 500 ml bottle, adjunct free $23 with adjuncts will cost you $25...

it’s less a “fail” and more a “confines of the system” situation in my eyes. for example, i knew MO would be BAA. however, BBT consistently has higher ratings (even if it’s only slightly (4.7ish vs. 4.8ish), but BBT is a new listing every year since it’s technically a different blend every year. so, it will get retired before 1) it gets enough ratings to get higher than BAA and 2) retired beers aren’t included in “top whatever” lists. you just have to understand the BA rating / scoring system is all.

Yeah I think the article could have used UT ratings and got a completely different list. This list is just based upon BA’s rating system so the listings have to fall within that criteria. Cheers.

and, like any ratings / reviews / best of lists, it’s all subjective. so there’s that too.

Of course it is. And it’s easy for all of us to go “that’s not the best stout from x state”. But, very few of us have sampled enough stouts from all 50 states to create a comprehensive list which is what this article is attempting to do. I’m not sure how many stouts from each state someone would have to have tried for me to call them a reliable source to create a list such as this one. 100 from each state? 1000? Therefore, this kind of list is as close as one could get to a reliable glossary of beers. Even if you could cherry pick a few from the list and say “I think I’ve had better.”

CO's is Coconut Medianoche. Not sure that's the Noche people truly like the most (Starry tends to be), but it's probably the most common of the highly regarded ones. Do I agree? Not really, but I totally get it. It's an elite example of the type of big stouts that are popular these days.

Founders CBS is the listed best stout for Michigan. I thought the BA lists excluded 'retired' beers so I went to the Founders BA page to see why it's still active and discovered that CBS is still receiving ratings. Someone in Texas is the last person to rate this beer, and he might disagree that CBS could be a winner. He rated it at 2.64. Talk about everyone's 'personal tastes' being different! Wow!

Probably because he’s drinking it at a minimum of 3 years old at this point. Unless he rated a draft at the taproom.

i think regardless of how currently something has been rated, if the beer itself hasn’t been brewed in 3 (4?) years, it’s retired.

i kind of miss the system of year-round, seasonal, one-off, etc… active is a weird term for beer. Belgian Lambic that’s 10+ years old could be getting ratings but if it was a one-off brew that they’re never going to make again, it’s retired.

HW Trickery for VA... I can get with this. Just glad it wasn't something Hershey's syrup-y from Veil etc. and from a brewery a bit more established. I would have picked Gingerbread Stout but I guess Trickery adds the "rare" factor.
