A winter tasting for stouts would be a great follow up to the excellent holiday beers tasting…

    i tested positive yesterday.

    been a hellish 3 days!

back to this imperial stout tasting event...

    My suggestions:

    Must be Barrel Aged.

Must be something you've had in the cellar but had to reason to open even though you'd like to...2021 and prior years.

    Something "limited" .

    All adjuncts welcome.I

"This cold black steel melds rich caramel and honey flavors with lactose sugars and just enough charred black malt to forge defining stout balance. The addition of a custom blend of roasted Onyx coffee beans offers bold depth of flavors that drive the aroma."

That's a pretty accurate description. Espresso is the dominant flavor but toffee and biscuit flavors balance it out. One of my favorites every year.

I mean…. Is it not to be expected? You have a traditional meaning of “adjuncts” that has been used for hundreds of years that has been bastardized by brewers over the course of the last (10-15?) years to mean something completely different. Obviously there will be some pushback there. I don’t have a dog in the fight but I’ve always preferred the word “additives” or something similar when referring to marshmallow fluff and granola. In a similar vein; the debate between “wet” and “fresh” with regards to hops and/or what constitutes those terms. Cheers.

edit: I also find it somewhat funny that the word adjunct only applies to stouts. No one says adjuncted NEIPA or adjuncted kettle sour.

It also applies to lagers. There is a recognized style here at BA called American Adjunct Lager, which is arguably the most popular style with the beer drinking public.

S’Mores are not hundreds-years-old traditional additives?

I’m well aware of that one Dave. That’s the proper use of the term and the way the word “adjunct” has been used forever. I was speaking of it in the new sense of the word where people refer to adjuncts as all flavor additives. When we add strawberries to stouts, everyone calls it an adjunct, when we add them to IPA’s, I’ve never seen anyone call it an adjuncted or “impure” IPA, the way people seem to do with stouts. It’s just as interesting concept to me. Cheers.

Of course they are! Wilhelm von Lagerfeuer was the first to brew a S’mores beer in Bavaria in 1512. It was so delicious, that everyone wanted to drink that instead of the traditional lagers. So big beer, arranged for the implementation of the Reinheitsgebot to suppress the brewing of Lagerfeuer’s s’mores beer.

Isn't this why someone invented the the word addjunks? I love that word.
