Went Meanwhile last night, as most places are closed on Mondays and the wife found that they were kid friendly as we were meeting the niece and her toddler. Very good beers, big outdoor area. Good food trucks. Why didn't I have this on my radar in the past?

Glad you enjoyed your visit! Their space is very large and kid-friendly.

Let me just reiterate that Distant Relatives is a food truck you should definitely check out if you're visiting Meanwhile and open to eating. There's a lot of BBQ in Texas, but not a lot of (very good) African BBQ. They also have spicy smoked peanuts which pair nicely with a beer.

Went to Leroy and Lewis for BBQ at lunch, closed because someone stole their extension cord. True story.

Valentina's for some excellent Q. Then some day drinking at ABGB, still my favorite.

Some light snacks at LORO, tasty, washed down with a Rocket 100.

    Home tomorrow.

So how did you like LORO? It was on my hit list when they opened one in Houston, but I held off going because my daughter said it had a weird vibe. When I went to Funk and Sour, they had one of the best dishes there so went to the one in Houston the following weekend and really enjoyed it. It is kinda disconcerting I guess for the $$ it is essentially counter service. I told my daughter you just have to look at it as an upscale icehouse. Everything we had was solid and the server even threw in an extra dish when we asked him what his favorites were. So I will be going back.

Maybe our third time at LORO. My wife wanted the candied kettle corn and a beer as a snack before we went back to the room, I'm not one to argue.

This thread has been really helpful! I'll be in Austin next week and would like to find some good breweries, food, and bottle shops. Does anyone know of places brewing nice barleywines are barrel-aged stouts at this time of year? I also love a good German style beer.

Check out Zilker, my brother who lives there was just telling me they have a couple BA offerings. St Elmo might be worth a look too.

It’s a cool spot, I’ve been a couple times. Close proximity to a bunch of good food too (like most of Austin, ha)

Nice Food truck outside, Have fun while you are there. Also to plan out your trip, most breweries have their taplist on their website so you can see what they have to offer.

Unfortunately we don't have many local breweries doing either of these two styles very often.

It looks like Zilker right now has Barrel-Aged Sun Don't Shine in the Shade which is the only currently available brew I can think of that fits in those categories. I checked St Elmo's website and they don't appear to be serving any stouts or barleywines at the moment. Live Oak usually has their barleywine available but they don't appear to right now.

Right now ABW has Sputnik, their 8.5% non-BA RIS, and Meanwhile has Fireside, an 11% winter warmer, so those might be good substitutes.

The problem(?) is that most Texas spend most of the year in heat/humidity. So lighter, more refreshing beers are more common.
