If you ever do find this it would likely be a good idea not to drink it.

I wonder what a one gallon plastic milk jug of moonshine costs?

    Cheers!

Illegal stuff? I don't know the cost of that. Licensed commercial stuff is around $35 for a fifth of the "Original recipe" and around $48 for "Buckeye Lightning" (prices from about 5 years ago).

Around here it's usually pints or quarts.

I have zero experience buying moonshine. I am only familiar from watching the TV show Moonshiners:

The most common thing to get is "apple pie", a blend of shine and homemade hard cider. Quality varies with producer, but a good batch is very, very good. A guy I used to know, who worked in the beer industry, would get partial kegs from bars and breweries, then distill it down into what he called Hop Schnapps. Batch variation was certainly a thing.

That is why you need to buy your 'shine from an expert like Tickle!?!

I remember years ago this restaurant had Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout on tap (or maybe it was a bottle), they poured it for my wife in their standard bar "pint" glass which either case I'm sure was 12 not 16 oz. The waiter was smart / nice enough to warn us that it was 10% beer. We knew that but if not printed on menu is good idea by the place.

And honestly would prefer 8-10oz pour of beers that are high abv. I'm not out to get drunk, and if going to order a string beer, rather have smaller pour and then order a low abv beer

One day when I was in college I skipped class mid-day to go shoot pool at my usual dive. I ordered a beer glass of whisky (for the afternoon), set it down by the pool table, turned to rack the balls, turned back and the glass was gone. The bartender and I were the only ones there, so asked him, and forgetting what he just sold me, he had picked it up and thinking it was a warm flat beer, dumped it out. Needless to say he replaced it. Looking back at that time, lucky I have a liver.

Lotta folks in this thread who seemingly haven’t worked in bars/breweries or at least haven’t in some time. With bars, those high ABV kegs are expensive and typically 1/6 kegs at most. The smaller serving size does have something to do with higher ABV but it’s also how these places can make money on those kegs.

Obviously as consumers we’d always like to have more for less, but beer isn’t getting any cheaper and that’s just how it is. Also, even though these places are venues to consume alcohol, most places don’t want you getting blacked out on TIPAs or BBA stouts even if you’re responsible about it. Hell, I’ve seen extremely expensive kegs of barrel aged wild ales or lambic that were around 5% and served in a 10 oz tulip format.

At the end of the day, so long as you’re not falling out of your chair or bothering other people, you can always go back for a second pour.

So do the math. If you have a high ABV on tap, sometimes the pub will cut the pint to 12 or even 10 ounces. There's no way that the brewer paid 25% more for the raw ingredients to get the higher ABV. I will never believe that.

Back in the day by SJSU there was a place affectionately referred to as "Cluck U" (university chicken) that'd sell a one gallon pitcher for $8, but it required 3 IDs. As I was a regular in the afternoon after classes they'd just sell one or two to me.

Also quite lucky to still have liver remaining

Beer isn't sold by the brewer with a fixed margin above ingredient costs. That's not how it works at all.

I Stopped into a place a ways back and they had DFH 90 minute on tap.
Asked for one, presuming it would be a 10oz - they give me a full Imperial pint. Then asked if I wanted another once I finished nursing that one.

Then what is the goal for making their margins?

You'd have to talk to individual brewers to figure out how they settle on their pricing. But I've never encountered one where they priced their beer with a strict margin+ ingredient cost. Someone somewhere may be doing that, but in general breweries seem to be aiming to hold their place in the market's value hierarchy without ending up with a bunch of unsold product.
