It’s definitely different but in a good way. Quite hoppy!

Is it a Quadrupel? Or is it an English Barleywine? Perhaps a hybrid?

    Amazing beer, either way.

ADWTD (2022) Double Oaked. Aged for 9 months in Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrels, then transferred into freshly emptied Woodford Reserve Double Oaked barrels for an additional 7 months. Comes in at 17% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a crazy dark brown - almost black. A VERY thin layer of light brown head, but it's pretty much non-existent. Going into this one, I figured it would be boozy and intense, given the ABV. Let's find out. The nose is a BA barleywine on steroids. Holy crap. Super intense notes of Armagnac, brown sugar, bourbon-soaked toffee, figs, plums, raisins, tons of vanilla, and a hint of coconut. Dang this is a beast! After a couple of minutes of sipping on this, the bourbon barrel really shines through even more. At this ABV, I can almost transport myself to sniffing a Glencairn with Woodford bourbon in it. If you like bourbon, this is a barleywine for you!

The taste is equally as intense, but not as balanced as the nose. Here the sharp bitterness kicks in, along with a strong sweetness. They are fighting for top spot. I think it's simply that the bourbon is so incredibly strong in this one that it overpowers the barleywine taste. Still, really nice notes of toffee, plums, raisins, vanilla, oak, clove, pine needles, mint, leather, slight coffee grounds, chocolate, molasses, and an earthy note. Even after a little while, it's still incredibly boozy. What's odd is that I love bourbon and I love barleywine, but they fight in an odd way in this one. Don't get me wrong, it's great, but it could have been a lot better (IMO) with a lower ABV.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is mostly toffee, booze, and an earthy/hoppy note. Overall, this is a good one, but loses some points for being slightly out of balance.

Seems I liked this a bit better than you, but it isn't one I need to have again.

I have found my people! BWs are my jam and as discussed here earlier, there aren't enough being made consistently.

Two amazing ones to start the year for me.

Penrose The Other Tomorrow is a sleeper. Haven't heard much but a friend that knows I love BWs shared a can with me and it reminded me of BCBBW of old. It blew me away! And for $18 for the 4pack it's a stupid good deal!

And then yesterday I went to the Rev DB VSOJ release and fell in love with a new favorite beer. The layers of complexity and the depth of the flavor blew me away. They also had an Apple Brandy variant on tap that might be a tad better but the original held its own.

What’s a realistic price for this beer if it wasn’t Anchorage? $100 is absurd. I’m thinking $30 on the shelves is still high, but in today’s market, expected.

Welcome home! As you say, there aren't enough barleywines around, no doubt about it. People with access to Revolution though, are lucky indeed!

Double barrel-aged barleywines are getting more common and I suspect that Anchorage will be in for an unpleasant wake up call one day soon. The last offerings from Kane that were double barreled were in the teens for 500ml bottles and they were as good or better. D.B.V.S.O.J. sounds amazing and it was also in the teens for 12 oz. Anchorage isn't on my radar anymore.

Thanks! I've said it before and will continue to say that Revolution is King when it comes to accessibility and price. I love them so much.

Price is such a big factor for these beers. Bourbon County 2-Year BW is just turding up the shelves around me cuz no one wants to pay $40 for the 16.9oz bottle.

    DB stouts, too.
I was impressed by the one stout I had from Anchorage. The intensity and freshness of the coffee was unlike anything I’ve ever had in a stout. I haven’t had a barleywine from them, but would be willing to buy one, as I’m a habitual ticker(but not for more than $50). After that I would be over them unless their prices drop

While drinking Straight Jacket now, my first thought was “wow, Santa’s Brass (had it Christmas eve for the first time) is criminally under the radar” it’s just as good, if not, slightly edges this

2010 Doggie Claws, stunning in every way.

It's beautiful to look at, pouring with perfect clarity and a massive rocky head. I get honey dripped peaches and apricots plus toffee and hints of marzipan. I had this vintage a year and a half ago and it was magnificent then too. Easily the best Doggie Claws I've had, both then and now. Still available on the HotD website, for anyone placing an order this vintage it is worth the couple of extra dollars.
