Hmm is that a Prairie beer? Methinks I saw one of those last week and wasn’t familiar. How is it?

    it is

    Here's another one from @unlikelyspiderperson
Never had a Cabernet And Bourbon BA Beer
Dark Fruit takes front seat and a nice mix of vanilla, mild tobacco and dark chocolate play around in a way that makes it easy to drink.
    11.5% . A nice session beer!

Good day BAs! today's New Breakfast Beer is the next to last of the (mostly) random picks from the 2022 BA Extreme Stout Box:

Barreled Treasure (Aged in Spirit Hound Whisky Barrels) from Odell Brewing. 12 oz bottle. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Received in Beer Advocate Extreme Stout Box 2022 - $158.99 (Including tax and shipping) for the box containing 168 total oz of beer ($ 0.946/oz). Reviewed 28/01/23 (Review 3023). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Etched above the bottom “210415A2W” but no identifiable date found. Served at 56.8 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 63.3 degrees.
    Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Deep Amber (SRM 15), clear.
Body – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear lite, still opaque with light penetration at only the edges, xanthous.
Head – Average (Maximum 2.3 cm, aggressive center pour), dun, high density, average retention, dropping to a 0.3 cm crown fed by carbonation, and a thin, rocky cap.
Lacing – Poor. Sketchy sine wave of isolated bubbles.
Aroma – 3.5 – Light chocolate and weak roasted malt. No hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 3.75 – Weak roasted malt forward with a very watered-down whisky flavor, no hops, no yeast, no barrel. No ethanol (12 % ABV as marked on label) aroma or taste. Mild gastric warming which builds. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, short of creamy, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 (After deducting 0.25 point for an undated personal container) Looks like virtually every other Impy stout out there, sans lacing, although the xanthic light penetration at the edges is relatively unusual. Both aroma and taste are weak, being otherwise typical of impy stouts. The palate is unremarkable. At $ 10 a four-pack, I’d buy more. Above that price point, no.
    Rating 3.6, rDev -12.4%

@Resistance88 listed most of my thoughts and suggestions, but here a few others:
    • AleSmith has a “speakeasy” serving exclusive BA releases down a hallway in their taproom, typically open in the evenings. You can confirm their hours, though I’ve been there when it wasn’t open and the bartender was kind enough to bring me back a pour from the room.
    • San Diego Tap Room in the Pacific Beach area has an expansive draft and bottle list updated online.
    • Bottlecraft should have good stout onsite and to go options.
I hit AleSmith and San Diego Tap Room anytime I get to San Diego. I also hit Modern Times, Pure and Resident, though those are less stout focused beyond MT’s pastries. I do recall liking the stout I tried at Pure Project.

Thanks, between this and @Resistance88 I have a good idea of what is worth hitting (I am with the kids so even with just short of a week I'll have to choose carefully. ). Enjoy the weekend. I've been to SD before but only hit MT given time constraints/ geography etc but I'll have a rental car and uber or taxi budgeted for so I'm excited to go a little further out.

I have been to Alesmith a couple of times recently and have been quite disappointed. Everything seems to be slipping in quality from Alesmith, and the tap list isn't always very good. I would definitely check ahead to see if anything interesting is on tap.

California as a whole is pretty a shithole for stouts.

Alesmiths saving grave is Speedway is still being produced.
Their Anvil and Stave stuff can be great but i agree, Last years BA Speedway and VSS were garbage and they fact they use Reyes makes them even more Garbage-Errrrrrrrrr .
I only get variants of Speedway there cuz i am not paying 10 dollars for a pour of speedway there:joy:( 7 plus 3 tip)
Lost Abbey is a good time,MT is pricey and worae than Alesmith.
Never been to PP but who doesn't like PP¿!
