Tryanuary is pretty much the opposite of what half of my friends are doing currently. Made dinner on my birthday tonight a bit awkward at times.

Good morning BAs! My new to me breakfast beer is “Ada” an imperial stout from Weathered Ground Brewery, Cool Ridge, WV. No adjuncts such as chocolate, vanilla, coffee, etc. added. It’s been awhile since I’ve had such a stripped down non-barrel aged imperial stout - let’s go!

No canning date. Poured at 53°. One finger of creamy light tan head with some small rocks; excellent cap retention; lots of lingering soapy lacing; heavy ring; black body with ruby edges; thin legs at best on swirl. Nose is sweet malt, roast, and then a whisper of chocolate as liquid warms. Entry is semi sweet malt followed by roast; bittersweet dark chocolate on backend; no alcohol; bitter roast finish. Medium light body; moderate minus carbonation; no warmth from 10% abv; thin watery plus feel. Overall, an old-school non-BA imperial stout with no adjuncts added, that is well balanced, no hint of alcohol, and just malt flavors; a little light feeling for abv, drinks like a porter; a tasty back to basics beer; I’ll buy more.

    4.5 | 4.25 | 4.5 | 4.0 | 4.5
Score 4.39 rDev 0 I added beer to database.

My only gripe is that this microbrewery (great location up in the mountains off of the WV Turnpike north of Bluefield) with solid to some excellent beers does not bottle/can date. No deductions in above scoring…hoping for more transparency in the future.

Cheers and have a great Sunday y’all!

I had an amazing experience at yesterday's Central Waters Brewing's 25th anniversary party. This is the anniversary ale, a BA stout. I did not try it yesterday. Above is a pour of Black Gold, the highest-rated beer in Wisconsin, which is also a BA stout. Let's see how this beer stacks up to that one. Pitch black color, with a nice light brown foamy cover. The smell is strong with caramel. Coffee, bourbon, vanilla, and chocolate also blend together nicely. The smell is impressive. The taste unique. Different than Black Gold, but still incredible. Very smooth. There is a strong caramel flavor. It tastes like a Twix bar. That is a good thing. Chocolate, vanilla, graham cracker, and bourbon flavors create a wonderful blend. The alcohol is well-hidden. The mouthfeel is silky. Creamy. Thicker than most of their BA stouts, which are often thin. The carbonation is light. Overall, this is an incredible beer. I cannot easily tell you how it compares with other year's versions, or how it compares with Black Gold, but I will simply say that this is an exceptional BA stout. I hope @Victory_Sabre1973 will be able to split a bottle of this with me on 6/24/23, after I celebrate my grandmother's 100th birthday, in Annandale, MN. Then we can walk over to Spilled Grain Brewhouse, where we will review approximately 25 beers for NBW.

Good afternoon, Weekenders! Instead of a proper new review today, I've got a hybrid review/revisit - much like @JackHorzempa (and the same beer!).

I first reviewed Ruination in May 2013 - very early in my beer journey on this site, and nearly 10 years ago. My palate and experience have changed quite a bit. The beer itself has changed at least a little, clocking in at 8.2% ABV (vice 7.7% back then). I don't know how much the recipe has changed other than the ABV; Ruination 2.0 was properly called an imperial IPA (vice the OG Ruination's single IPA label), tracks at 8.5% ABV, and obviously has an updated hop profile.

How does this Ruination stack up today, and how does it compare to my old notes? In the words of everyone's least favorite Norwegian black metal racist jackass, "Let's find out!"

The appearance is a dead ringer for my 2013 review. If anything, I'd probably bump it up to 4.5, if I were to re-rate it (which I am not).

As a fresh experience, this is about what I expected: very bitter, but very clean, with primary expressions of citrus and piney hops, and a barely sweet somewhat bready caramel malt profile. A bit oily and very drinkable. Very much a WC IPA.

How does that compare to 2013?

"The bitterness hits immediately, with grapefruit and other citrus rind hitting all parts of the tongue. I'm surprised to find very little sweetness. Three phases: initial citrus bitterness, followed by a bit of a malty flavor over the tongue, and finally a thin wave of slightly sweet bitterness that cleanses your mouth. This is a step up (for me) from their normal IPA, but I would prefer some more sweetness to balance it all out.

First off, the 7.7% is completely hidden; completely. Feels good in the mouth, fairly easy to chew and toss around. The malty second portion is a little oily on the tongue, but that isn't at all unpleasant. I can take in a large mouthful, toss it around, and then gulp it down easily."

That really all checks out today. I pick up more resin now, along with a touch of pepper and some lightly floral dankness. I compared it to both Stone IPA and Enjoy By; back then, it sat right in the middle of the two in terms of enjoyment for me, and I'd say that's exactly the case now as well.

Other than that, and perhaps some words about the bite and dryness in the mouthfeel, I'd say I could easily cut and paste that review (update the ABV) and provide it as a review of the beer in my glass right now.

Well done by Stone to bring back an old classic. This is a winner for anyone who loved the OG Ruination, or anyone simply seeking a classic WC IPA in this world of low-IBU murky juice bombs.

    Review from 2013, below:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/4083/?ba=Roguer#lists
4.10 / -4.4% (among thousands of reviews and ratings)

Would I bump up the score today? A touch. 4.5 in appearance, maybe 4.25 in taste and 4.5 in feel (from 2013 scores of 4.25, 4.0, and 4.25), and a corresponding increase to the overall. That tracks with my own greater experience and appreciation for the WC style; I'm honestly kind of shocked that I gave it such high marks back then, given my very limited experience with truly bitter beers.

    Cheers!

Got some quiet time before heading over to the in laws for tacos, I made the guac and homemade tortillas , and Eagles game. @LeRose opened a kölsch yesterday so why not join him, I picked this beer up yesterday...don't worry @snaotheus I plan to have one of yours later today :beers: I'm currently taking the first step to getting my hunting licenses here so this beer has a fitting name...

Czig Meister - Huntsman (kölsch 4.8%)

This beer pours a very light straw color, it has very good clarity, not crystal clear, chill haze that comes very close disappearing completely, a white head that leaves some decent initial lacing, a thin film persists.

The nose is quite enjoyable to me...light dough aroma, there is some wafer aspect to it, white grape juice with a refreshing zestiness.

The taste comes close to the nose; light white bread, green fruit skin; less fruity and sweet than the nose led on, moderate spicy hops on the finish.

Light body, slightly hefty, nicely effervescent and prickly, drying sensation noticeable, very clean with low to moderate bitterness on the finish.

A pretty tasty kölsch, it drinks very nice albeit with a little more heft than others. I enjoy the finish on this one a lot though. Two new beers from this brewery have convinced me to try others of theirs if they show up.

Enjoy what is in your glass today, see you all later today :beers:

Drank this last night. Mixed 6 pack, didnt realize it was a mix of Stone Delicious till I got home. Thought it was a mix of the regular Stone IPA. (I am usually more aware of what I'm buying!)

Stone Delicious Double IPA. 9.4% ABV. Thankfully a 12 ounce can.
Nice frothy head with nice lacing.
    Clear copper appearance.
    Medium body with decent carbonation.
Aromas of citrus and maybe some lemon.
Taste is oranges, tangerines and hint of lemon at first with some nice candied malts.
Get some sweet berries at back-end.
Finish is slightly tart and crisp with the sweet berry hops lingering.

Usually stay away from IPA's with such high ABV"s but this is really nice. Alcohol is pretty well hidden and beer has a nice balance to it.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Goose Island Bourbon County Coffee '22 (Intelligentsia Burundi Turihamwe coffee). So happy they brought back their coffee variant! My first time trying this vintage.

Pours a Cola color into the glass and rests as pitch black with three quarters of a finger of a dark mocha head that dissipates pretty quickly.

Aroma pops with freshly roasted coffee, albeit a little acrid but still pleasant. Bourbon and charred oak are interwoven from the barrel, as well as caramel, raisin, dark chocolate, and brownie from the base.

Taste follows the aroma pretty well. Like previous vintages of BCBCS, this shows off the coffee well, but still integrates the barrel and base nicely. The coffee is a little acrid, which can unfortunately happen with coffee stouts, but not to the point where it's severely detracting from the beer. Freshly roasted coffee, raisin, plum, brownie batter, dark chocolate, roasted malt, charred oak tannin, some vanillin, bourbon.

High medium body. Slick, sticky, oily, mouth-coating. Soft, yet robust, carbonation when you first pour it, but flattens out as it sits in the glass for a while.

Despite my excitement for this to come back to existence, this is not my favorite vintage. The coffee presence is a bit acrid and just doesn't hit the mark for me. That being said, this is still very enjoyable. The barrel is well integrated into the beer and the base is top notch as you'd expect.

While I am playing chef, I'm drinking a new beer, Creatures of Magic, from Burlington Beer Company. A nice NEIPA.
A hazy orange color with a thick white head and abundant lacing.
Fruity aroma, both citrus and tropical. Some pine.
Taste of grapefruit and pineapple. Late taste of pine.
    Smooth and creamy.

Clear copper-hued body; sparse carbonation; nice head, thick and dense; fat white rings of foam encircle the glass. The nose offers a nice hint of Irish whiskey and oak; hint of fruity esters. Incredible flavor; apple, pear and peach; very subdued bitterness; lightly tangy; dab of oak; a light suggestion of honey. Heavy body; smooth and slippery.

This is an interesting beer. I only picked up the Irish whiskey profile in the aroma while the taste was nearly all esters and delicate sweetness. While the smell and taste don't necessarily match up, together, they create a very nice overall beer experience.

First new beer today. Noble Shepard Brewery "Lucy". NEIPA 7.0% ABV.

About an 1 Inch head, even with an aggressive pour. Fades quickly but does have nice lacing.
Looks like unfiltered murky cider. Not the prettiest beer I ever saw.
Aroma is the highlight of this beer; lots of tropical fruits and red berries.
For a NEIPA its mouthfeel/body is a little thin.
Taste is sweet berries, orange juice and melons.
Finish is a tad light and the slightly sweet berries fade too quickly with no alcohol.

Really easy drinking NEIPA. But it is lacking in mouthfeel and wish the hops had a stronger presence. Which is a shame because the hops I do get are nice, just wish they were more pronounced.

l have been meaning for a long while to get round to this but it sorta disappeared from my radar last year, alas here it is. Looks great. Copper in the glass, fluffy melted marshmallow head bouncing along the top.

Smell permeates firmly the moment it’s poured. Grassy and herbal, some ripe fruit and some hints of malt sugar.

Quite an impressive mouthfeel. Sharp on the top of the tongue but so rounded and clean. Hops show up throughout like waves. It’s just a tidy pale ale, dealcoholized or otherwise is not to the point here. I’m very impressed.

Good pint then, and I’ll be onto something stronger in due time I’m sure. Though I’m feeling a wernesgruner first maybe, we’ll see.

    Enjoy the afternoon!

I've had Peanut Butter Dark Adaptation before, but this is my first go with the regular beer - as "regular" as this pastry stout swimming in additives can be. Both places I bought each one stated "BB" Dark Adaptation" on the tag, and sure enough, the can mentions "a touch of barrel" buried in the description. Hmmm.

The additives aren't particularly clear, either, as it's tough to tell from the description what's a flavor description, and what's a flavoring actually added to the beer. At a minimum, it's clearly got vanilla added, and probably chocolate, coconut, marshmallow, and pecan. And maybe spent some time in a barrel. Possibly.

Well, what's most important is whether or not it's any good, so let's get to it!

Bottom line: yeah, it's good, but it's not great. The vanilla is so strong that it implies banana both on the nose and palate. The rest of the flavors - added or implied from the malt and yeast - blend together in an almost muddled fashion. Sweet but not cloying, but it's definitely a dessert beer. Mouthfeel is smooth but thinner than I'd expect from a self-espoused pastry stout. There's no detectable barrel influence (a similar experience to the peanut butter variant).

This is good, but again, it's not great. It looks like they set their sights sky high, and while they managed to get off the ground, it's not exactly an air show.

Looks like I'm not alone in the good-but-not-great assessment ... at least, from the 2 full reviews and 1 rating that exist for this beer.
