In my opinion, I think there are two issues at play here:

-I think anyone who thinks they can accurately compare a beer they are drinking right now to the memory of a beer they drank 10-15 years ago is fooling themselves. Aside from just pure memory issues, there are changes in palate, changes in average beer quality in the industry, etc.

-There are tons of factors that can affect your senses and how your brain processes the experience of drinking a beer. Mood, energy, environment, health, placebo effect of expectations, what you've recently eaten/drank, etc. With plenty of different beers, I have definitely had the situation of drinking two cans/bottles from the same six pack a couple days apart and having differing opinions of enjoyment.

I think people have just gotten hyper focused on it with NN that it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. The most recent bottle of NN I drank out of the six pack I bought, I thought the hop aroma was a bit livelier than the previous bottles. But I can say the same thing about other IPAs I've recently drank. I'm guessing it had more to do with all the other factors, rather than the beer.

When I buy Perpetual, I know what I’m getting. When I buy Mad Elf, I know what I’m getting. When I buy Nugget Nectar, it’s like playing the lottery.

Even if my mind is playing games, it’s still not worth the price.

Have never seen this anywhere in the west, would love this to be distributed. (We've made some great strides the last couple of years getting Heady topper and many other east coast favs.)

Well said, I have that happen often after trying a beer on multiple occasions. Hell, my allergies are so bad sometimes I can't even smell a beer at all, and i"m sure my taste is affected too.

You are correct here, there is zero doubt in my mind that for some stupid reason there is batch variation with Nugget Nectar. In the past I purchased a six-pack of Nugget Nectar and every one of those beer had zero hop aroma (and I do mean zero!). I would drink one of those Nugget Nectar beers with zero hop aroma and then afterwards drink a differing brand of IPA and the hop aroma 'popped' in that beer. There was no palate issue in play here.

For completeness when I was able to get a 'good' batch of Nugget Nectar I did really enjoy those beers.

But as Dirty Harry would say:

So I stopped by the mini mart down the street a little earlier to grab some beer for tonight.

They had 6 packs of NN bottles for $12. Best by date of 4/21/23, so probably the first batch brewed or close to it if I had to guess.

For being almost 3 months old, it’s tasting pretty good. Body is good as well. Aroma is a bit muted, but not nonexistent like previous years. Then again, I think I’ve always gotten cans.

Would I buy another 6 pack of bottles with a best by date of 4/21/23 for $12? Yes.

This is the Nugget Nectar I remember from years back.

Hopback is available currently at Troegs. It wasn't distributed, but if you're in the area, you can get it at the brewery.
