You know that your pours are always gorgeous, but gosh, this one just make me want to take a sip and cover my lips in it.

I'll have to revisit either black butte or obsidian at some point soon...:beers: Happy Friday Dave

...I'd love to have Black Butte again (...and Mirror Pond)... @Ocalafox gifted me a box of their juicy IPAs back in October...they were okay but nothing that I'd purposely hunt down again (yet would gladly drink one if proffered to me)...

We used to get a larger part of Deschutes portfolio around here than we do now. They planned on having an east coast production facility that would've allowed that to continue and likely increase, but that ended up being abandoned as the market changed (more and more local breweries). Obsidian Stout was one of those we just don't see much any more.

So I grabbed a six-pack over XMas in Portland, and definitely enjoyed it as much as expected. I just checked and I never rated or reviewed it :scream:

So I can't rely on that, but the thing with the part I quoted - I'd be just as apt to rate a beer up these days for not including adjuncts and not being thick and heavy when it doesn't need to be. I've become more impressed by tasty stouts that have some body without completely weighing me down, and Obsidian fits that bill for me.

I'll have to remember I've not rated it and grab some on my next trip to the source to even out the difference in thought processes

    Cheers!

I visited the Roanoke tasting room 6 weeks before that location was closed. I started a thread on that topic:

Yeah - I never got a chance to visit. Ballast Point had plans in the surrounding area as well. In-state brewery Three Notch'd is the most recent "out of town" place to have a satellite location downtown. There are a handful of local brewers as well, though they wouldn't have any beers fit for this thread

The Deschutes reference got my brain gears moving to realize that what I consider a Deschutes seasonal classic should be available. That would be Red Chair NWPA (Northwest Pale Ale) and according to their beer finder it should be available at a store 5 miles away. :beers:

...I totally agree about possibly scoring a non-adjunct, non-barrel aged beer a bit higher than those that do utilize those aspects of modern brewing...and, I believe, some of that came into play with my ratings on this particular beer although I still ultimately rated to my personal prejudices...I just wish I could bring to mind some simple non-imperial / RIS and barrel-aged stouts to stack up against Obsidian...I've got to admit, it's hard to find a simple, basic stout nowadays...

...yes, Red Chair...I know I've seen long ago, may even have had it, but if so, never rated reviewed it on BA...

Had a 6 pack last week or two weeks ago. It's as good as ever. I'm not someone who loves hoppy reds or bemoans their decline but it's a nice change of pace every now and again and reminiscent of the scene in this area when I moved out here in 2007.

Honestly, I could see the kinship to snpa in this last pack I enjoyed.

Lots of great beers mentioned in this thread that I've enjoyed over the years and so many I want to try now :beers:

A few that I don't think have been mentioned:

    Weihenstephaner Korbinian- My favorite Doppelbock

Weihenstephaner Vitus- My favorite Weizenbock (tied with Adventus)

    (Yeah I like Bocks )

Olympia (RIP)- My Dads beer, always enjoyed having a few fishing or sitting on the deck at our families cabin. Was still buying a couple of 12 paks a year for those times when an AAL just fit the bill.

LOL! In anticipation of Sunday, this thread got me to grab a couple bottles of red seal ale, along with a bottle of aventinus and a bottle of Schneiderweisse. That should see me thru the first half.

Old enough to be a classic?

I don't get Captain's Daughter nearly enough- pure tangerine and pineapple. Delicious!

And Mirror Pond. When I moved out here those two were my main go-to sixers.

As well they should have been. First tried MP around 1992 and loved it. Reminded me very much of SNPA, which I loved. A great APA, sold at a good price and widely distributed at the the time.
