This is aimed at pubs and breweries but has some useful info for those of us who want clean glassware. Oxiclean and white vinegar, who knew?

Feels like the problem I encounter the most = bartenders who dish out beer that has been hanging out in the lines too long. Outside of a beer-specific bar, getting the first pour of something for the day (or longer) is a scary endeavor.

    Usually.

There are times when the dishwasher is called for. After a party, or when other people have been using my glassware, or when the glasses have been sitting with heavy lacing dried on.

    Any
time I’m in a bar or restaurant I want to know that the glass I’m being served with has been sterilized in a commercial dishwasher at high temperature - as required by sanitation ordinances pretty much universally, I expect.

But I agree that for casual, personal use a thorough rinse under the hottest water I can tolerate and upside-down air-drying is best. And a little white vinegar from time to time.

This: "When the glass is too cold, it causes the beer to become overly frothy," is the exact opposite of everything I've been taught and experienced. The colder the system, including glassware, is, the less foam there is. The so-called "glass rinsers" were actually developed to reduce the temperature of the glassware from room temp to help with this.

Side note, I hate those glass rinsers.

Dirty tap lines seems to be the most common problem I see. Usually at dive bars, bowling alleys, etc. I can usually deal with "bad" pours.
Why never dishwasher? I usually wash by hand, but occasionally (probably every 2-3 months) I throw them all (except for the delicate ones like teku) in the dishwasher for a thorough cleaning. They look great afterwards, and no sign of bubbles, etc. after pouring.

The dish washing soap doesn't completely come off the glass sometimes. The residue can affect the taste and pour sometimes, and if you have the Chimay like glasses with the metal rim, they can wear and come off over time. Though of coarse, you might not perfectly hand wash the glass either, and if the dishwasher works fine for you, other than the large/fragile stemmed ones, then thats all that really matters

When you take the glass out of the dishwasher to put it away, stick your nose in it and give it a whiff. For whatever reason, my spiegelau IPA glasses hold onto the detergent smell. Other glasses not so much. YMMV.

...hence, the alcohol presence in beer...not strong enough to kill 'em all (the bad things), but enough to weaken 'em for the average gut to process and still give you a nice warm feeling...you know, sort of like live-attenuated vaccines...:sunglasses:

Former bartender here (twenty odd years ago) and the bar had a dishwasher doing the job but we didn’t use some of these special glassware like Duvel with fading lettering over time. Only Heineken or 1664…

Now at home, I don’t even have a dishwasher. I just do it using soap or lukewarm to hot water.

As for pouring, well that’s fairly technical at this point but I manage to do so well mostly. Speaking of Duvel this has to be the most « interesting » beer to pour into its tulip.

...some beers certainly benefit from a chilled pour, but I certainly don't like my heavy ales (e.g., porters, stouts, barleywines, etc.) chilled to near-freezing - lagers and such, I'm okay with...at least I don't see many places offering 'frosted mugs' of beer anymore, so I'm good...

You do have to trust on-premise locations. It's easy to spot a bad pour, soapy, old beer, flat beer, and a well poured beer. When out you deal with what you get, mostly (they're are exceptions). At home I can pour beer properly, or I haven't yet chided myself for a bad [our or soapy glass.
