2001 J.W. Lees. Poured at fridge temp. No head. The nose is intense. Port, figs, plums, musty leather, yeast, rhubarb, and a hint of chocolate.

The taste is incredible. Tobacco, burnt toffee, honey, brown sugar, malts, port, and sweet candy. Lovely beer that has aged very nicely.

Sweetwater Tavern (not sure who actually brews their house beers) - Roadkill Barleywine. 10.2%abv

Like the shaker pint serving method, this is old school American microbrew barleywine - starts with sweet caramel malt, finishes with underlying earthy bitter hops. A little bit of a sticky mouthfeel

2019 Tripelroot barleywine, by Zeeland Brewing Co.? I thought tripelroot was the brewery when I grabbed it but I haven’t heard of either, so, anyways it’s all caramel up front and mostly caramel in back with some bite. The 12% is coming in handy as bedtime is exceptional candy consumption mania.

In general how easy is it to get beers like Deth's Tar or Cafe Deth, or their Barleywines in Chicago? Does one need to go to the brewery/pub or can they be found in shops via distro? I know that their low ABV beers are everywhere but how about the ones above?

That looks familiar enough that I probably looked that up back when I bought it. The bottle says “brewed and bottled by Zeeland Brewing Co.” which I don’t see any mention of there. They only seem to go by tripelroot.

It all depends on how limited the beer is. SJ and Deth are available on the shelves and last a good while. Same with Ryeway. The variants are hit or miss if they last but most of them hit distro. If a beer is brewery only, they do an online sale earlier in the week of the release and proxies are allowed. You could always check out the Rev thread and see if we are already talking about the specific beer release you might be interested in. The current "season" ended with DB VSOJ and Boss Ryeway last month.

There was loads of Revolution stuff in the downtown Binnys when I went to Chicago last October. I wanted to grab that AND a lot of other stuff but I didn't have the time/space to get it back home.

Man that one post just took me way back to so many that I have enjoyed over the years... Brought a tear to my eye. Many of these should be brought back as winter releases at the very least!

A very enjoyable beer for sure. Had a fellow BA in the PHX area that bought a case of the 2011 and 2012 versions that i enjoyed very much. Lost track of that BA and his willingness to buy a case at a time. If you never been to the brewpub i highly recommend it, very cool locale in the Pacific.
    Cheers!

Sounds like a wonderful beer Dan! I know i am way late with my timing but the Eagles could have used some Wooden Cleat Sunday!
Being a long-suffering Arizona Cardinals fan i am excited to see how the Philly DC Jonathon Gannon performs as the head coach!
    Cheers!

Agreed. The website has the same logo and is almost certainly the same place. This quote is from the about page, “Tripelroot is a brewpub, deli & market located in downtown Zeeland, Michigan.”

    regardless, cheers.

Fantastic batch of Arcane Rituals(2022)! The honey-caramel sweetness upfront is balanced by the smooth and well-integrated cognac/bourbon barrels on the finish...delicious!

Mechaphant from Old Irving Brewing. A nice barleywine. Poured at fridge temp. Pours a dark brown with a relatively thin layer of head. The nose is toffee, malts, and some nice dark fruit. The taste is fantastic. Malts, plums, raisins, toffee, candy, marmalade, honey, and marmalade. Great stuff.
