Wear and tear has always been my concern! I have a nice collection dating back 20 years or so, the crown jewel being a Sierra Nevada balloon glass I've been drinking from for 15+ years. So admittedly I do get slightly anxious when I do a dishwasher run. (ha)

The blue tractor in Ann Arbor used to serve their beer in a frosted mug and then the bar had some kind of frozen strip to set your beer on to make sure it never departed that near freezing state.

This was all presented as high class, real beer aficionado stuff

Could be because the bottom of the glass isn't getting fully rinsed/washed in the dishwasher because of how narrow it is.

I always use a bottle brush to clean these by hand.

Not surprised that this thread is not getting more posts. I'm sure some are embarrassed, while others are mad.

The only issue I have with pours in public is the inconsistency. Too large of head and I'm getting robbed in the amount of beer, or no head and what is wrong with the tap? I've learned to take what I get. We are a picky bunch Beer Advocates. If I want a pour the way I want I've learned I'll pour it myself.

And some don’t give a fuck because this has been a huge non issue in life.

Well, that's pretty obvious! We are all different. Some people just tend to have a better hygiene than others.

I would go the other direction and say that if one learned how to do dishes properly as an adolescent that they’ve probably cleaned their glasses normally their entire lives and never had issues nor had something so trivial ever cross their minds.

Being honest I was tempted to give in the temptation to be snarky here too but I decided for a more serious reply.

As Jack said, it’s BA and we even got a Brewariana forum for all beer geeks out there.

I used to care a lot for glassware, after numerous losses I stopped caring. Still own about a dozen and won’t waste more dime on purchasing glasses I am unable to keep in one piece for longer than several years. :slight_frown:

You can be as snarky as you want. If you look at the comment I replied to, it was with regards to people potentially getting “mad and embarrassed” about this subject. While some of us take it more seriously than others, I think it was important to point out that maybe those not commenting really just don’t care that much. My point stands.

Your point stands and I actually agreed, re-reading myself I thought I made it clear enough.

BAs are just a breed apart from other beer drinkers, in any case.

Personally my most common beer pouring mistake is definitely:

*Begin pouring, not seeing much head formation*
*Increase intensity of pour to try to coax best head possible*
*Realize the head was actually just slow to form*
*Rush to slurp up the foam while looking like a maniac*
*Still end up with beer running down the side of the glass*

    Rinse and repeat, pun intended.

One that hasn't been mentioned is opening the tap faucet only part of the way when trying to pour just a little bit when topping off. This actually creates more agitation which leads to foaming. The tap handle has two positions: On and Off. Unless of course you're trying to create more head, then go for it.

I mean, part of it isn’t about hygiene, it’s just ignorance. Actually, most of it is probably ignorance. Most people probably put all their glassware (including beer glasses) in the dishwasher.

We have to do a lot of dishes by hand, but we use the dishwasher when we can. It is a nice convenience, especially with a kid. Never put beer glasses in, but otherwise we did. I’ve used a yeti for 100% of my water drinking for at least 6 years now, so using glasses (mostly shaker pints) from the dishwasher was never an issue for me, but I knew that I didn’t like it. Here, I really was too lazy to wash them by hand, because it didn’t affect me and didn’t (seem) to affect my wife. Well, now we wash all glasses by hand because my daughter can tell a difference.

Circling back to the start of my post, I have no doubt that smell aside, most people’s significant others (mine included) would have no idea from looking at a pour that there was anything wrong with it. This is like the super, super extreme NE corner of beer nerdom.
