Not as well-versed in Munichwines, but this was delicious! Even when Cellarmaker "experiments", they put out quality stuff!

J.w. Lees Harvest Ale (Matured In Lagavulin Whisky Casks)

From the cask at the Bullshead in Lititz, got the last one. Last time I had this here in 2012 it was poured from an actual wooden cask that the whiskey had aged in. It was too unbalanced, very salty and smokey, I did not enjoy it. This is a completely different animal. The sweetness of the base is largely blunted by oak and mellow whiskey, the peatiness is pretty subdued but there is a nice, lingering smoke note. I do get some toffee and very faint fruit. The cask was tapped around 2 weeks ago so this might not be in prime condition but I am thoroughly enjoying this. My original score of 2.52 needs to be revised dramatically upward.

    Pipeworks Saddle Up
16oz can 2020 release purchased at Binny's at room temp recently and poured into a Duvel glass at just above fridge temp 11.3% ABV. The beer pours opaque medium brown with light brown head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of tiny bubbles. Minimal lacing. The aroma is mild with bourbon, cherry, barrel and sweet malt. The taste is semisweet caramel malt with subtle cherry, bourbon, oak, vanilla flavors. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with average carbonation and a semi dry finish. ABV is fairly well disguised with only a slight warming of the tummy to give it away. Overall, very good.

    Cheers all!

I should have mentioned the vastly improved mouthfeel this cask offering has over the bottles I've tried over the years which have been kind of thin to me. The hand pump today provided a wonderfully soft and creamy experience. Hope I get to try more vatities on cask someday.

Interesting. I wouldn’t have expected that from a Barley Wine. Definitely worth exploring.

Not sure how hold the Behemoth is, I suspect 3+, but just guessing, I never did like the waxed bottles but the bombers are fine when I'm only gonna have one!

Yes it is! Still hoping the most recent release makes its way to my area, almost out of the previous batch.

Town Hall - Twisted Trace bourbon barrel barley wine.

My first from this place, I think. Thoroughly enjoying the bourbonization of this fellow. I don’t know the unbourbonized version but I can tell this shit’s aswim in repeal in the best of ways.

Another style from Cellarmaker that I haven't had many of...Black Barleywines. Is it a blend of a stout and a barleywine? Or is it a barleywine that uses chocolate/dark malts? I am not 100% sure what is what but, whatever the case, this tastes like chocolate-covered caramel-toffee bits! Yum!

In the spirit of barleywine appreciation and to mark my 1900th review here on BA, here's a beast.

    Three Floyds Behemoth

22oz silver waxed bottle purchased recently at my LBS dated 12-22-17. Not sure of how it was stored as it hasn't sat on the shelf all these years. No ABV listed. Poured into a tulip pint glass at fridge temp. The pour is opaque medium brownish amber with dark khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and island leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring sweet oxidized caramel malt and resinous fading hops. The taste is semisweet caramel malt with subtle hints of pipe tobacco, old leather, burnt toast, and fading piney hop resin. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with just less that average carbonation and a semi dry finish. Sticky with lingering unfermented malt sweetness and hop resin, but not cloying. Overall, excellent today, but definitely a different beast after 5 years in the bottle.

    Cheers all!

Waiting on a Breakthrough from Spring House in Lancaster PA

This is from a local brewery that has largely fallen off my radar. Anyone remember what a killer coffee stout Planet Bean was when it first came out?

This is pretty dang good. I didn't love this at the first sip, but I pretty quickly changed my mind. Sweet up with caramel, faint dark fruits, and plenty of well incorporated vanilla. The vanilla has an earthy edge to it which helps keep this from becoming too sweet and that's good because it lasts into the finish which adds drier notes of light char and dark chocolate. Happy to have bought this pack.

Here's a local Imperial Barleywine from Kiitos. A 15.6% American..i think. it's got a huge booze hit up front and moves into some hops but not real hoppy like Bigfoot...before it hits that it gets kind of sweet..i guess like some English Barelywines might...but not really..They call it an Imperial Barleywine and I'm diggin it..but it's not really American or English..it's Imperial
