Like last year, Goldings were the first to poke through. That was a week ago. Cascade made an appearance this week. One difference is they're both about two weeks earlier than last year. Although this winter has seen a few days at/below 0°F, it's generally been a mild one.

Anyone else seeing some activity yet?

    Riiippper,
Nope, nothing here except around 14 inch of snow and ice.

will report when snow is gone and sprouts are up.

My Cascades are poking through. I’m gonna cut them back just in case we get one more freeze. I want to only let one bine grow this year. Last year I let them grow wild.

I also ordered some new hop plants from Great Lake Hops. They said they would ship them in April. [IMG] The description of each plant sounded like they would make a great lager.

Just curious as the why just one bine. The conventional wisdom is to prune down to three-four bines.

    Cheers!

Well because I didn’t have conventional wisdom until now lol. I thought commercial hop growers and let one bine grow up.

Still yet to pull the trigger on planting hops, but some of the varieties they have really piqued my interest. For any of my gardening, I'm big on planting things that I can't readily buy.

Are burn downs similar to this video of flame weeding?

Could be. It would serve the same purpose. But usually it's done with herbicides because it's cheaper and faster.

They use flames in the Yakima Valley to kill off the first shoots. Saw a video at YCH Hop and brew school. They have it mechanized using small tractors driving down the rows.

Any one farm out there has more acres of hops than all of Michigan.

No chinook shoots coming up for me, yet. I purchased some Comet rhizomes this year, we have a lot of fence in our backyard with plenty of sun, so hoping to start growing some more along it!

Good video on where Tree House purchases their hops. Thought I’d share it. The Lupilin in the hops is crazy.

I have ordered all my fillers for plants that didn't make it last year and am looking at improvements to my irrigation. Still about 8 inches of snow over my rows though.

Just checked my plants yesterday and there's nothing. We had a very unusually cold late winter/ early spring so I'm expecting they're just taking their time

My small hop yard has shoots ranging from 2" to 12". I'll be burning them down tomorrow with a stout propane torch.

Just checked and my Cascades are coming up. I have 3 shoots so far that have come up through about 4 inches of mulch. I am thinking it is way too early here in Denver. We will definitely still have some hard freezes and snow. Should I cut them back?
