That is really unique. Looks like no. 4 of only 389 I'm guessing. I like the simplicity too. Thanks for sharing!

Wow! That has some serious detail to it. I have no idea what she paid for it but it couldn't have been inexpensive. She's a keeper! Thanks for sharing!

    Great thread @ATL6245 !

As you can see, I have a few from which to choose my favorite:

(Beer from this morning - as in, right now.)

Most of them are family heirlooms from my ex, whose mother was born in Germany as a military brat (yes, for some reason I got those in the divorce - and I'm not complaining). A few are kitschy gifts from family over the years. And one was ordered for me as a gift, so that one is certainly a contender.

But my overall favorite has to be this one, because of the phrase on this side:

It translates to: "Brown beer, you noble juice." That sounds about right to me. :grinning:

Which reminds me of Steinbier, brewed with hot stones. I had a Bavarian Steinbier, a wheat ale, that was very good. I need to research the technique a bit more. I do remember the fellow that brewed it and sold it to me was pretty drunk and I think it was contagious.

@Roguer THAT is an outstanding collection! You've got several gems among those. Your favorite was a great choice not only because of the phase, which I too identify with because of my fondness for Dunkel, but that one looks like it may have some nice value to it. The lid is dark on the outside. If it is lighter on the inside, it's probably genuine pewter, which I understand is a sign of higher value. Excellent! Thank you for sharing!

Hmmm. I've never heard of that. If you discover anything of significance, be sure to post a tread. I know some others of us interested in beer history and German beers would like to hear more.

Yeah, all of the older original Steins have pewter lids. The newer and kitschier ones are obviously a hodge-podge of whatever's probably cheapest.

Value isn't something I've worried about, as the value to me is based on heritage (they may have been her Steins, but she's not actually German by descent, whereas I very much am).

Thanks for posting that! That is really interesting because I would have thought it would have been really hard to keep those stones hot enough, long enough to even complete the boiling process - or at least that would be super inefficient. Add the smoked malts was a nice ouch.

"In the early 20th-century brewing vessels were largely made of wood, and thus, could not be directly fired." Lol!, yeah I can see where that would be a problem. One time use of brewing vessels.

I have posted many photos with these in the background.

In the Summer of 1981 I visited Germany with my Opa. We visited relatives and saw some attractions. One stop took us to Bayreuth. Looking back I wish I had purchased two steins that were different. What did I know them? I had not even consumed beer.

Paid 43,40 Deutsch Mark and 36 DM for these. Both are made in West Germany. Some here my not even realize there was an East and West Germany. I can still recall visiting the store and asking the person (in broken German) to bring a few down for me to see. Prost.

So many cool photos so far. Keep them coming.

Cool thread, @ATL6245 - here is mine. An older stein from Freiburg, where I lived for a year.

Those are nice. The one one the left has a great painting on it, which I particularly like the ones like that. Most of those were still hand painted back then, which is extra special. I think you made two good selections there. Thanks for posting and sharing your story. That's the best part to me. A connection with your past and a nice memory too!

Hi @Beersnake1. That is a beautiful stein! Do you remember where you bought that one? Was it new or an antique of some kind?

The one on the left is a recent addition. In the middle and on the right are the salt pot previously referred to and and the sort-of matching stein posted earlier.

[IMG]Also a hint at some of the larger collection.

Not sure how old this one is. I purchased it used and the previous owner said that it was quite old. I honestly have no idea, but love the stein! Cheers!

From a trip to Munich and the Rhine region 38 years ago. The limited edition stein on the left was handmade by Thewalt who made steins from 1893 to 2009.
