Yes, in 1774 the brewery was not ‘named’ Robert Smith.

My understanding is that the brewery was started by Joseph Potts in 1774 and in 1786 Potts sold it to Henry Pepper & Son. Then in 1807 it changed ownership to a partnership (George Pepper, David Pepper and Frederick Stickel) until 1837. Then when Robert Smith arrived, he went into partnership with Frederick Stickel and he eventually became a full owner in 1849 (you list 1845).

Robert Smith was not a colonial era brewer but the brewery was.

    Cheers!

Well, wasn't me, exactly - it was The Western Brewer's 100 Years of Brewing but, yeah, somewhere around then- mid 1840s - what's a few years here or there when we're talking pre-Civil War America.
Yeah, my comment was referring to the text of the 1934 Schmidt's ad which says "First brewed in 1774 by ROBERT SMITH" which would be quite a trick (America's first prenatal brewer!) OR, well, maybe not THE Robert Smith.

Did you buy the throwback variety pack while it was around? It was in there.
