Not quite as good as I remembered but not too bad. Immediately after this I had a veltins and man why can’t are macros taste like that. I’ll definitely start mixing in some aal to save a few bucks but I couldn’t drink nothing but aal.
I am a little confused by this. You started a thread about getting some Schlitz which is a macro AAL beer. Then you 'ask' why doesn't it taste like an all-malt Pilsner? You are a confounding person. Cheers!
I understand they are different styles and will not taste the same I guess I was trying to say why can’t we make this good of a beer in mass for a decent price like the Germans do.
The full flavored beers in the US, even craft beers, are still niche products. If Stone IPA (for example) sales had taken off like Corona did, we might have some more competitive pricing. On the other hand, the success of pricey Corona suggests that lower prices aren't key to a brand's acceptance in the US. Marketing costs money that our consumers are willing to pay.
Well, for a number of different reasons and over the course of over a century and half of beer (de?)evolution in the US, if a US-brewed "macro" tasted like a standard German lager beer did or does today, it would no longer sell like a macro, by definition would not be a "macro" selling in the tens of millions of barrels a year. Granted, at this point, neither owner Pabst nor the tiny, unsucessfully revived Schlitz brand sell in that range today, but some use the "macro" term to describe the US AAL style. A style which, of course, has lost market share to even lighter "Light Beer" and seltzers and, as @moodenba noted, more costly Mexican imitations of US AAL's and light beers.
So Michelob lager is dead eh. Did they kill the amber bock and Light versions too, I've still seen those on shelves for a while after I haven't seen traditional Michelob Lager That was a decent beer.
I believe their last Michelob batch was bottled a month or two ago. They pulled it before a few years ago for a while, IIRC, and I guess it could return someday, but wouldn't expect it any time soon. Not sure about the other Michelob brands beyond of course Ultra sticking around, the lone bright spot for AB. I really liked the previous 80s/90s Michelob version they changed, and their OG Michelob Light beer was also excellent, the only light beer I really liked and would order on purpose. They reformulated Michelob Light about the time (or shortly thereafter) Ultra came out and I never bought another. We haven't seen Michelob around here much the past several years. They missed an opportunity to keep Michelob special, and blew it in favor of max profits which led to its demise. Would go to Boston Blackies here primarily to enjoy Michelob on draft until that ended. Ditto Casino Royale on the Las Vegas Strip, which had $1 bottles to draw folks into their dumpy casino. Those were the days....
Have you tried DAB? I like it and it's a relatively affordable German import. Last time I checked DAB pricing near me I could get case (24) of 16oz cans for ~$25. My local store's DAB stock seems to turn over relatively quickly, so it's usually decently fresh for an import. YRMV
And best of all is the original 1896 Michelob, but you will have to brew it yourself. I have an article that I will be submitting for publishing soon. Once it gets published I will provide you with a link. Cheers to 1896 Michelob beer!!
Your reaction is what I had in mind when making my posts. If Schlitz is on one end of the spectrum, and Schilling is on the other, then where does one put Veltins? Rather than having Veltins at a fixed point between those brands, it is likely that Veltins sits closer to Schilling than Schlitz in terms of flavor, but sits closer to Schlitz in terms of price. If the gap between those two points is very large, then you found a good value. How's the price difference by you between Schlitz and Veltins? Veltins by me was $5 a four pack last I looked. I've seen cases of it being considerably higher in other markets though.
At first I was gonna say ouch (I remember when it was $4.50 by me), but then I looked at some websites and the price by me in some spots is quite high since I last took notice. König was $5 for four by me back in October and now it's $6.50. I did a double take.
No disrespect, and I wish you nothing but luck, but... you're hunting for cases of shitz and you're worried that strohs might be terrible?
I seen the 30 pack of Strohs back in 2019. I passed on buying it then because I did not want 30 beers of something I never had before and yes at the time I was afraid it might be terrible beer. Back then I had no clue Pabst owns both brands.
Yup, I’ll hop on the Natty Boh bandwagon - drank that for 4years in College in Virginia but haven’t had it since. Remember it as piss water and nothing I’d ever really want to drink again but would gladly revisit just to taste again.
I work at a Minogue's Beverage Center in NY and we absolutely carry Schlitz. I remember my Dad would drink this stuff on occasion and I can't really remember how it tasted. I'll have to pick some up and see if it will actually usurp Genny Cream. Genny Cream is currently the only regularly available cheap beer I actually enjoy. I don't know if making the trip up to upstate NY for Schlitz would be worth it for you, but it definitely still exists up here.
Does Schlitz sell well for you? Are you able to have rapid turnover of the product or does it 'sit' too long? Cheers!
Plenty of Schlitz here in Central WI and Northern, IL. In fact, the Granite Falls Super Club in Montello has it on tap and use branded Schlitz pilsner glasses. https://www.facebook.com/102592668285249/photos/a.105276841350165/645833853961125/?type=3
It isn't the best seller, but there are certainly dedicated regulars that come in for it to justify getting it in.
