Makes you wonder what those monks would talk about in week 2 or 3 of their strong ale fasts?

The inability to respectfully discuss consequential topics where people disagree is a failure of our culture, not an inherent problem with consequential topics.

Laws are made by politicians, so I don't see much of a difference. And I think we, as a culture, have avoided talking politics for too long. We fight about politics, but we don't actually talk about it. I wish that could change and would like to contribute, however I can, to that change.

How people aren't becoming monks anymore so they can no longer remain Trappist breweries?

Totally agree on both accounts. But that's not going to change on a beer message board. Especially in a format where everyone is anonymous. And it absolutely isn't if people are actively drinking while communicating.

I'm cool with it either way though! As long as we can still talk beer too.

Maybe a forum, where those who want to engage in the political conversation can? For example, if XYZ brewery launches a beer called "Bernie Sanders can Beat up Your Dad" then the thread discussing said beer could be moved to that forum? I don't know, just thinking out loud, so to speak.

There's an old axiom: "Drunk words are sober thoughts. Pay attention."

What are you trying to say about my dad!?

And what if my dad is Bernie Sanders...

For the most part yes, that's likely true. But people are far less diplomatic when drunk.

"diplomatic" sometimes equates to masking. A few drinks, the guard comes down, and people start to say what they really think.

Perhaps, but, as noted above, it's been a long tradition - and not just in the US, but kinda "on Earth". Elsewhere? Yet to be determined but once that right-wing, anti-union asshole Musk Oops, strike that. Sorry, I started doing it again.

Which is perhaps not always a good thing. I don't really mind if you're a homophobic, racist asshole, as long as you keep it to yourself.

As someone who has been on this site for a number of years, I'm very happy with the status quo. It's all too easy for political opinions and points of view to turn into flame wars and pissing contests. Sure, it would be great if we could all discuss political issues related to beer in a calm and respectful manner, but in my experience that rarely turns out to be case. Invariably, you're going to have participants who are simply very passionate about their point of view.

P.S. I actually do mind if you're a homophobic, racist asshole, but as long as you don't flount that point of view on BA, it's something I can ignore.

I have no patience for politics - compromise is a lost art ….

anywho… back to brewery pet peeves- i don’t like when breweries rely on Facebook, Instagram, etc. rather than actually putting up a decent website with useful information.

@John_M said it better than I could (and has been on this site a year longer than I have). What is detailed above is almost always how these end on these forums. You're combining anonymity in a place where people are likely drinking while communicating. That's never going to end well. Hell, it almost never ends well in the real world when people are face to face...

At least if that asshole is sober and possibly willing to hear another view point, they may word their misunderstanding simply as that. "I don't get it, but I'm willing to listen to your view point." Then MAYBE, just MAYBE, a discussion can begin.

If that person is drunk, they're likely going to get heated and say something like, "Well FU** YOU, YOU....*insert awful names*." End of conversation.

We have a local brewery who thinks very highly of themselves. I was told by the brewer on why they don't serve flights: "We don't believe you can truly enjoy our beer is such a small size". If tere were beer was any good, I might understand, but....I want a taste before investing in the pint.

Out of curiosity, what do they feel is a correctly sized container needed in order to appreciate their beer? A pint? An imperial pint? A crowler? A growler? A sixtel? A half keg?

Most places that serve flights where I live, serve them in 5 ounce portions. At least to me, that seems like an ample size portion for ascertaining what a particular beer tastes like. I would be curious to hear why the brewery you're referencing feels otherwise.

We have a ton of breweries in Boise, and just about every single one will do a flight. Except for these guys. They think they're really special. This is the same brewery who went after one of my buddies because he gave them a less than glowing review. And also bold enough to go on RateBeer and rate their own beers a 5.0! They just want to sell you a pint, knowing they're making more off of it than a flight would. won't even get into the whole "disabled vet" thing they promote heavily. She (the wife and associate brewer) was a amateur kickboxer (after getting out).

Only my personal opinion on this.. It is not the size of the vessel, but how flights are often consumed that is the issue with actually getting an appreciation for what each beer is. 5oz is absolutely enough to "get" a beer, but so many people order a flight, take a sip out of each one in quick succession, and then invariably rate them on untappd.. This gives way to the common review of "no flavor in this pale ale / pils / ect".. but you just had a sip of it after a sip of an imperial stout and a saison.. I am a fan of places that do small pours, and also allow for easy ordering, so I can try a few different beers, in order, without them getting warm before I get to them.
