We had the kids at the Chesapeake Bay for shark tooth hunting this weekend. Perfect weather on a lovely secluded beach today.

Found over 100 Miocene era teeth. Having a peach brandy barrel aged English barleywine from Central Waters while looking at the favorites.

This is my first barleywine from CW that isn't Kosmyk Charlie's based. The peach brandy barrels dominate which works for me. No fresh fruit to be found here, these are all booze soaked. There is some caramel here and maybe a little wood, but this is pretty much a showcase for fruit that should be kept far from open flame. Love it.

Blithering Idiot. Last checked this one in about a month ago and it’s gotten even better. This is reminiscent of Straight Jacket but not aged in barrels. Toffee, vanilla, caramel. Did they ever do a BA version of this?? No idea when it was bottled

Been a loooooong time since I've had that, need to revisit. The barrel aged version is called Insanity. It used to be easy to find, hope they make it again.

Only seen it at one local place and I’m glad I snagged a 4-pack. English barleywines are pretty hard to come across on the shelves, barrel aged or not. Wish I remember what it cost, but I’m very certain it’s an insane value. So good

Well this is something. Imagine an American stout with vanilla, but with the chocolate malt and alcohol ramped up and the carbonation dialed back.

[I really wish that stupid phone would stay focused when I press the button.]

I had a sample of this on cask the other day. No carbonation at all and the vanilla was more prominent. Might need to go back for another.

I agree this is an odd duck, but it worked for me too.

The vanilla takes it in a completely unexpected (for the style) direction. Glad I have a few more to enjoy down the road.

Thin Places from Dancing Gnome. English barleywine aged in bourbon. Comes in at 11% ABV. Big thanks to @adrock314 for sending this one!

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a murky brown with a bit of head. Nicely carbonated. The nose is toffee, slight citrusy hops, red wine, and a grassy note.

The taste is fantastic. Bright and exciting. Bourbon, vanilla, toffee, plums, slight hops, leather, lemon, and slight maple. The alcohol is nicely hidden. A very solid BA barleywine.

Around here you used to be able to buy a 24 bottle case for like $75. Or probably $15 a 4 pack.

On Saturday night, broke open the bottle of Hair of the Dog Don that I brought back from Portland last year with a couple of friends. Since it's not carbonated, capped the rest and now enjoying it again. A ton of complexity, at different times I pick up each of the barrel types.

I wish I had the chance to try this before they closed their doors. How long will it keep after initially being opened?

Keep an eye on HotD's instagram page - they recently announced they will be releasing another batch of Don, likely the end of April, no idea if it will be sold in-person or online.

As for how long it lasts, I didn't tell any difference between Saturday and Monday - capped right after pouring. I still have about 2 oz left, and will be traveling for work this week so probably won't finish it until this coming weekend. I will report back.

Dagon from New Image Brewing. Nothing added and no barrel aging. Comes in at 10.5% ABV.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown with a thin layer of head. The nose is full of nice smooth malts. Bread, slight toffee, a touch of maple, and a slight oaky bitterness.

The taste is nice and smooth. Sweet toffee, tons of malts, figs, slight hoppy bitterness, honey, and a floral note. Very nice, and glad to see a brewery coming out with a straight up English barleywine without barrel aging or anything added.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is sweet toffee.

Sharkeez Sharkeez from Horus. A French oak barrel-aged English-style barleywine with 2X hazelnuts and Mojave Vault Reserve series Panama Geisha natural coffee added. Comes in at 14% ABV. I'm a pretty big fan of sharks, so I'm a tad excited to try this one

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a beautiful dark brown with a creamy (thin) layer of head. I'm immediately hit with hazelnut on the news. Super smooth. Milk chocolate, cream, vanilla and oak. Not really picking up any coffee on the nose.

The taste is fantastic. An explosion of flavors and no hint of alcohol. Rich chocolate, super smooth and delicate note of coffee, light barrel, tons of hazelnuts, a hint of cinnamon, bread, malts, caramel, and an interesting note of apple pie with whipped cream on top. After the beer warms, I start to get a burnt marshmallow note. Seriously, this is a fantastic beer.

The mouthfeel is medium to thick, with a nice aftertaste of hazelnut cream and slight oak.

pFriem Bourbon barrel aged barleywine. 11% English style aged in bourbon barrels.

Nose is figgy goodness.with lurking bourbon. Taste is a pronounced raisin/fig riding a boozy bourbon flavor. Boozy but not overly hot, the bourbon is very lightly sweet. Mouthfeel is good but much lighter than the Jackie O’s barleywines that I often drink. Lighter and less sweet. Both are good variations on the English theme.

Not much carbonation (some would be welcome) and no lacing.

An enjoyable sipper on a late afternoon with giant *********s falling outside. Too warm to stick, but a beautiful sight nonetheless. Cheers.

That's an interesting one! Didn't know you were into sharks, if you're ever in the Mid-Atlantic I'll tell you where to look for teeth. We haven't found a megalodon yet, but once a little girl a few feet away from us did. Brat.
