These are the places I would recommend for Berlin. English will be spoken at all of these so you'll have no problem! The Eschenbrau has a smaller range of beers with three or four regulars and another that they brew monthly.

The Castle was my local last time in Berlin. Many expats from UK, and close to the Humbolt University, students from all over were conversing in their second language, English.

I can second Vagabund and Eschenbraü (Wedding represent!). I would also add BRLO, Hops & Barley as very good breweries/pubs.

If you'd just like to taste some interesting beers (and are less interested in the brewing), then Hopfenreich, Mikkeller, and Dolden Mädel.

Northern Germany is mostly Pils-land, but you can find cool stuff if you go looking.

Just wondering if you could suggest a few actual breweries to go to that have their own beer on tap to try. Your suggestions for bars/bierhalls/pubs looks great, but sometimes we also like to go just to a brewery to try their beer only. Thanks for any suggestions..

I think Watzke in Dresden brews their own? I was only in Dresden for a night but I think I went there and enjoyed myself for a beer or two. I don't know if it's a "can't miss", but I enjoyed it.

Also, maybe a local could help my memory a little, but in Berlin I think Georgbrau near the Rotes Rathaus brews their own beer? And it has a nice little outside area if memory serves.

    You are correct.

Lemke may not be a favorite, but the beer i had was ok.

Something different would be the Schneeeule taproom in the Wedding district for Berliner Weiße.

Here are a few where you can try their own beers on tap:
    - Protokoll
    - Braugier
    - Vagabund Kesselhaus
    - BRLO
