7 month old Red Seal was the best I ever found here recently, bought it, drank it, enjoyed every single bottle.

Packaged. Or is it a BB date?

I received an email reply from NC asking for the code number on my Scrimshaw -- I replied and also asked for confirmation of the code. Stay tuned.

Packaging date per an email with NC customer service a couple years ago.

Not in our stores yet. Still got some Powder Day, though.

Yeah, not sure on the specific details of this. The BT post showed 8 kegs shrinkwrapped though. :open_mouth: Hope you get a chance to get out there to try it if it lasts past the 7th.

Once I was handed the decoder rings about 6 months ago I actively looked for some fresh Red Seal and found it without too much trouble. That was, ever has been and is a delicious Amber Ale. I think it's time to look again. For me it's in the same league as Deschutes' seasonal NWPA, just so well rounded and pleasant. Just a job to drink slowly.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program...

Well gang, this plot thickens -- or muddies. From the brewery this morning:
"So it gets a little confusing." So, the first 2 is the brewing year (2022), but the last 0111 are the bottling dates (January of the following year)? Anyone else find it odd to mix up years?

What was your source for code translation Jay?

That's bizarre. I just went back and looked at the email I received back in 2020 and this is what I was told
I suppose it's possible that their "batch number" actually includes the first number to represent the year, and it is generated when the batch is brewed?

Well, your email is correct -- the first number IS the year... just not clear *what* year.

I want to reply to get some clarification, but I'm just afraid it's going to add to the confusion.

Maybe I'll ask when they're going to start using clear bottling dates -- maybe then I'll think about purchasing NC again.

This thread should be retitled summerfest lookout and north coast date codes.

Per the beer finder, summerfest has hit my area. Looking forward to trying it.

Always one in the crowd and it's probably always you.

If you've been following along, some folks have compared NC Scrimshaw to SN Summerfest, so that's where the connection was made.

Unless you just want to jump in at a random point and spread facetiousness around -- that's okay, too.

@steveh. Oh goodness, relax. I’m just poking fun at the tendency of this board to veer off topic. Discuss it all you want. And yes I usually am the jerk in the back of the room spouting off. Cheers.

Interesting, thanks for sharing the update. I think I might have picked it up from an older post of @unlikelyspiderperson. It's still a correct translation only that the Y character represents year brewed. And year brewed will be the same as year packaged in most instances except for some of the end of year brewings when the packaging does not occur until in the following year. Can likely use the batch number to help determine whether this particular exception condition is present but still NCB's date coding is just about as bad as Anchor's old system.

I did some internet searching and came across this comment on this page. It does corroborate what you were told here.
