Does anyone else notice that all SN beers have a distinct taste no matter which beer or style? I am wondering what that is as I am pretty sure it’s not the hops. Curious if anyone else has noticed.

Obviously, you need to grab an SN beer to find out.

Chico is meant to be a neutral yeast. I’m surprised to see all of these responses

Neutral is comparative. It's not as bold as some others, but still has its own flavor prof9.

I would think their water also has an influence on their product's taste. Ask Hoegaarden about this!

    It's quality.

It's not simply Chico yeast. People have claimed that the Chico strain is the most widely used top fermenting yeast strain in the country. On top of that, Sierra Nevada's portfolio at the moment is basically: pale ale/IPA, stout, pilsner. Summerfest isn't made with Chico. There currently isn't a wide style variety with Sierra Nevada's "Chico strain" beers.

I agree with you. I like Sierra Nevada Pale ale, which is very good, but fairly neutral. The only character of the yeast I might point out is the fairly dry (well attenuated) flavor. This was a more unusual character in the early days of craft brewing when malt body was prized, but is common now, apparently coinciding with the push for higher alcohol contents.

That’s why their beer is so good. Many other breweries use the same yeast in a bunch of their beers too and it gives their beers a similar flavor profile.

I homebrew with Chico yeast a lot and it is indeed a neutral yeast strain.

When it comes to fermentation yeast strain selection is one brewing choice but there are a number of other choices which will be impactful to the qualities of the finished beer. A few examples:

    · Pitch rate

    · Fermentation temperature(s)

    · Fermenter size and configuration

    · Etc.

I suspect that for several of the Sierra Nevada ales that they ferment using the Chico yeast they also follow common fermentation practices.
