They must've overnighted some to Mills River at some point....

    Undoubtedly.

And regularly. Unless they've got their own propagation program, which I'd suspect they do.

Yes on Lagunitas, and over time I found it to be tiresome.

Yes for sure, Lagunitas has that sweet and cloying orange marmalade flavor to all their beers. Sometimes it works. But agree, gets tiresome and they tend to drink too sweet.

They have carried that signature NoCal flavor nicely eastward. I remember reading about how they worked on the water to get things just right. In fact, the choice of Mills River might just be that clear and clean water flowing just behind the brewery.

Never understood why they named the yeast after the one brother who didn't do beer ads? (Yeah, OK, not counting Zeppo or Gummo).

What? You mean just stuck it in one of those FedEx boxes, with all the care of grandma picking up a birthday card at Woolworth's, sticking a dollar bill in it, licking a 3¢ stamp and dropping it into the corner mailbox?

They didn't make a special flight with a special container (not a hat box, either) and an [armed?] escort, like Guinness did for their short-lived Long Island City, NY brewery?

@jesskidden -- I think the California town actually pronounces its name as Chee-ko, not Chick-o, so the Bros (not those Bros) don't get royalties.

    Never mind Gummo, eh?

Oh. Named after the character played by Freddie Prinze in that TV show, I guess?

Didn't you see my tongue pressed up tightly to my cheek? Plus, Chico even has a California state university sporting his name. Those Marx Brothers were more than just funny........

Why didn't they name it "Sierra Nevada Yeast:"? We aren't drinking "Chico Pale Ale". Come to think of it, there are several breweries in and around Chico (closer than the Sierra Nevadas) that might want to produce it.

If I recall correctly, I don't think SN actually named it.

I believe this is what we used to duplicate SNPA back when.

Blatz was the largest selling beer in Milwaukee and all of Wisconsin in 1951? Not sure I trust Groucho on that one. You bet your life! Wasn't Blatz always #4 of the big Milwaukee breweries?

Yeah, but Blatz being #4 nationally has no relationship to their sales in Milwaukee. And, having just checked the post-Repeal figures, looks like Blatz outsold Miller in about half the years between '39 - '49, with the biggest spread actually being 1949 with Blatz/1.6M bbl. and Miller/913k bbl.

Here's the breakdown of the entire Wisconsin (so, not just Milwaukee) state beer market 6 years after the Groucho ad:
Unfortunately, it doesn't break down the exact individual Pabst/Schlitz/Miller shares, but, according to industry records, the following year, the US DoJ objected to Pabst's purchase of Blatz "the leading seller in Wisconsin" and, eventually, the Supreme Court agreed the combination was anti-competitive and order Pabst to sell Blatz, which took until 1969 when Heileman bought the brand. So, it would be possible that Blatz was #1 in Milwaukee in '51.

Wow, "local" is still 32% in 1957--more than the Milwaukee nationals! That sure changed fast. Bud is a whopping 3%.

I wonder what the difference is here between "regional" and "local."

For Wisconsin's Beer Region of "West North Central" the Regionals were Heileman, Minneapolis (Grain Belt), Drewry's and "Other" - for a total of 30 -which might have included companies like Stroh, Goebel and Pfeiffer from "East North Central" (if they distributed in WI).
