How about this 2018 Thomas Hardy’s Ale - “The Historical”, bottle #22536, 250 mL.

It’s a big beautiful English Barleywine matured to its full potential in a cool cellar.
It was barreled in one of the most beloved Scotch whiskies, Chivas Regal, for 6 months.

A most excellent balance between dark caramel and brandied fruits notes, with perceptible woody and smoky hints, ending with a long, warming finale.,, a taste of honey lingered. Alcohol content is 13.7%.

After yesterdays Booty stout im about ready to swear them off for the rest of the year...at least most barleywines don't have adjuncts

Had this when i got home yesterday ..
IMO these are borderline too sweet but at least ot isn't at Fremonts simple syrup level and gets ya a good buzz

@DIM and @CarolinaCardinals - finally joining you with this one! Cabin Fever from Drowned Lands. Foeder aged barleywine - coming in at 10% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours an orange with fluffy off-white head. The nose is marmalade, grapefruit, vanilla, some toffee, a definitely hoppy floral note, and more citrus. Really refreshing on the nose.

The taste is fantastic. Very different from pretty much any barleywine that I've tried. The best I can explain it is citrus without the bitterness. It's like fresh grapefruit with some sugar sprinkled on it to balance the bitterness. Definitely a nice layer of caramel candy, orange, honey, and again that floral note. Super smooth.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice mild caramel aftertaste. Overall, a great barleywine that I will buy again.

I got Don double barleywine 2023 today, no chance this side by side with 2022 wasn't happening tonight. I love being able to recap these for later.

2022 17.8% aged for at least four years in rye, bourbon, port and rum barrels.

2023 17.1% aged over four years in rye, bourbon, port, calvados and maple barrels.

Appearance is pretty similar, both reddish brown with the '23 being just a little darker.

The aromas are quite different. With the '22 I get a lot of smoke, ash, and tobacco most noticeably. There are also hints of port, raisin, molasses, and more. Plenty of booze blanketing everything. The '23 is a lot more fruit forward with cherry and stewed apple primarily. I also get vanilla, candied nuts, and fairly prominent vinous note. Both vintages are compelling, slight edge to the 2023.

The 2022 tastes strongly of barrels, lots of ashy, charred wood along with tobacco and leather. Burned molasses and raisins marinating in port and bourbon round things out. Assertive, aggressive, amazing. In contrast, the 2023 offers fair less wood and more booze from the barrels. The brown liquors, while noticeable, take a back seat to the port and calvados which work really well with each other. Cherry, raisin, and grape along with milder vanilla, molasses, honey, and more are wonderful compliment to all that booze. Not as imposing as last years but definitely it's equal.

No clear winner. As different as they are I really like them both.

I just noticed that this beer was the one that opened up this thread; had it early last year and thought it was great! Felt like it got some unnecessary hate, but your notes were spot on. Hard for the Bruery to do wrong; the real challenge is finishing the bottle in one sitting :joy: Cheers!

Thank you to @Beersnake1 for reminding me to post this special Barleywine to this thread! Thought I’d share my more detailed breakdown below. Cheers!

Deep, brooding color on the pour, but without an abundantly noticeable viscosity. The carbonation is beige and builds to about a half inch in the glass, but quickly recedes.

The nose is a fantastic bouquet of brownie batter, cherry cordials, rum raisin ice cream, and Charleston Chew candy bars. With some time in the glass, more of the barrel becomes apparent on the nose, bringing with it a drying oak quality and hints of umami.

The palate contrasts nicely, really characterizing the Cabernet barrels so well. Flavors of burnt caramel, Raisinets, and roasty malt interplay with tobacco, dry red wine, charred oak, and a touch of rye spice.

While not huge and brooding in mouthfeel, there is a lightly syrupy viscosity that works with the profile. Big, boozy, dry, and mildly spiced has this big barleywine finishing with a lightly bitter drying sensation on the tail to accompany a long, warming tail.

I drank and reviewed this one earlier tonight, and noted in my review that it leans into American Barleywine territory. Unique for sure

Periodic Motion [Vanilla] from Fonta Flora. A bourbon barrel-aged barleywine conditioned on vanilla beans. Comes in at 12% ABV.

750ml bottle poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with minimal head. The nose is full of vanilla, slight maple, slight toffee, big malts, and some gentle dark fruit. Apart from the big punch of vanilla, the notes are relatively subdued on the nose.

The taste is really nice and smooth. It's definitely not a vanilla bomb as the nose might suggest. Getting some nice bourbon notes, vanilla, coconut, burnt toffee, bready malts, tree bark, plums, raisins, and a slight port note. Very nice - not too sweet and not too bitter. A nice middle ground.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. The 12% ABV is detectable, but I wouldn't call this boozy. The aftertaste is toffee, bourbon, and slight vanilla. Great beer. The one thing that I will say is that I don't need this much. If they could put this into a bottle half the size, I would be happier.
