I think that’s because we have seen several of these stories recently—and they are inherently political, there’s no escaping that. I guess I don’t understand why political discussion is so taboo on here (even if some people just want to talk about beer, but there are plenty of other threads for that); contrary to popular belief, it can be conducted respectfully and politics is intertwined with almost every aspect of our lives, whether we see that or not. And who knows, someone might learn something or be exposed to an idea or concept they’d never considered before. Worse things have happened.

USA flags were prohibited on beer labels up until the TTB rewrote that rule several years ago.
Old rule, under a list of prohibited labeling:
Some labels, besides the Bud noted above, came awfully close (PA's Stoudt's had a label for an American Ale with a painting of the flag, IIRC) but at least one brewer had their label rejected and Rogue had a long running conflict over one of their labels.
    Current rule language:

Many people don't realize the full quote from Samuel Johnson was:
"Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel who wants to sell more beer."

That’s true, and I don’t think that it’s necessarily a bad thing. These things should be talked about, preferably without it turning into a more ugly affair filled with personal attacks but that’s really not what I’m seeing here (mostly). Like I mentioned in a different thread, these recent discussions on BA seem to be more respectful and even productive than most of what I’ve seen on the internet in the past few years. I’m proud of us, and again I’ll say that I bear no one here any ill will regardless of political affiliation.

There is no emoticon here but I am presuming that this comment was tongue in cheek!?!

Beer packaging that would be attractive to kids is not appropriate.

    Cheers!

And yet... it's incredibly popular in the "craft" beer section

I’m not sure, but I think you might have misunderstood my post. The photos I posted above were from a breakfast cereal, not a beer. I wouldn’t buy my (then) 9-year-old daughter beer, even if it did have unicorns and rainbows on it. I’ll never even buy her this cereal again given how much she disliked how it tasted.
Speaking of my daughter, she has always been fond of the FW bear and lion and used to always look for them when strolling the beer aisle. That and those cool Ayinger caps with the little painting of the brewery on them.

Not to mention that its against the US Flag Code. Which is certainly ironic considering they are supposed to be appealing to those that consider themselves patriotic.

I know when I was in there was some annual training where we were told about all the ways the Flag couldn't be used as it might debase it.

Many of 30 racks of Busch bought between my brother and I in our college years…hunting, no pun intended, for the elusive Orange Busch can between the camo ones. I’m talking endless 30’s til we found an orange can for the novelty of it. Do either of us hunt? No. Just thought it was comical. May have been other vitamins involved…

Bud Light uproar shit will fade out and some other uproar will happen. Circle will continue. It will go back to normal.

New Miller ad is already uprooted the internet for its woman oriented ad.

There is always someone (read: millions) to give free publicity by being mentally assaulted by a beer ad campaign saying something against their beliefs. I repeat an alcoholic beverage company. LOL.

State of the world I guess.

My niece is 13. She'll soon be driving on the streets of Olympia. Thank God I've got the Cascades between there and here.

Yeah, more or less half my beer section at work looks like a candy aisle… and damned if it doesn’t sell

I think its taboo because a lot of people, myself included, find this website to be an escape from the political discourse that seems to permeate every other aspects of lives like you said, and the general shitbaggery of politicians on both sides of the aisle.

I will say that I agree with the poster below me who said he was impressed with the way people discussed the issues on here. There are occasional cheap shots taken but theyre pretty mild in nature, and honestly most of the Mulvaney discussion on here has boiled down to people either saying “the boycott is dumb and people shouldn’t be offended by any of this” versus “well, what did they think was going to happen?” I really dont understand why the threads keep getting locked.

    Sorry that was long winded

Fair enough, and I respect people’s desire to have a safe haven from political discussion, a place where they can just talk about beer. I just don’t think that’s going to be possible to do (at least if we also want to have a meaningful conversation) in threads like this one. I figure folks who really want to avoid discussing politics on any level probably just avoid these kinds of threads altogether. There’s no rule that says you have to read everything that’s posted on BA.
