Hops have took off the last couple weeks. Cascade mostly. The little bines to the left side of the trellis are Prussian, Hartwick and Mt.Hood is the lone bine on the back side. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] Plan to use them all in a wet hop ipa this fall.

My tallest is about 18', but most all the rest are +/- 13'. Several have sidearms, none have burrs. @Jasonja1474 has good sized cones and it's not even mid June. Wonder if those plants can be harvested more than once, or maybe an ongoing harvest.....is that even a thing?

Hey y'all. I've watched several videos, but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I have a Chinook and a Cascade in their second year. The Cascade is about 12 feet and about to reach the top of the wire that is hanging from a bracket on the gutter. What do I do when it reaches this point? Right now each has several arms, but they are tall and spindly.

Also working on a problem with aphids, but I think I know what to do there.

    Thanks.

Hey @riptorn last year I got 2 harvest off these Cascade bines and it was their first year. I read an article where there was study in Florida to see if hop bines would produce year round and they do according to them.

I am not sure what is left for them to climb in your situation, or if you can get up there you can train them back down rope. Once mine got over the trellis I train them down the back side every day as they just want to keep going up.

If you don't have a way to extend the line, there might not be much choice other than to let them start growing downward from their own weight.
Since the line is attached to the gutter, sounds like the bines might be approaching the roof. If that's the case, I'd keep them off the roof if for no other reason than to prevent them from getting baked.

The side arms will be spindly, initially, but can produce cones.

The post freeze hops are finally back in action. Had to haul water to them twice, but 400 gallons later, some are over 10 feet. Should be up to the cable by now which is around 16 but we take what we get

Burrs are forming on the sturdiest of my Goldings. The rest of them and the Cascades shouldn't be far behind.

So weird, we are pretty much the same climate and my Cascade are fixing to produce their second round of hop cones.

I'm wondering if elevation makes a difference. Mine is 3900' here on this mountain in Boone. What's yours there?
If that's not the reason, I might need to swing by late one night and dig up some of your rhizomes.

Do you feed yours? I've used miracle-gro the past few years but forgot this time.

Glad you guys are growing well. Many of mine are near the top cable, but burrs are still a long way off.
Usually I compost the hell out of the plants but since I got the first flush of hop shoots frozen I applied 15-15-15 granular fertilizer and now the hops are growing good.

getting dry again so back to haulin water

@riptorn not sure of our elevation, here in Maryville Tn. We are in the foothills of the mountains, so not quiet that high. I have not fertilize mine. The dirt is only 2 years old now, came with fertilizer in it. They were planted out in the raised garden bed last year with half mushroom compost and half top soil. We did fill the bottom of the beds with lava rocks and sticks to help fill the void “less dirt purchased” and it helps the beds drain very well. We have had rain for 4 days straight here and they haven’t pooled up yet. I think the loose garden bed dirt they like, I put rhizomes in some clay in the field next to my house and they just died out.

Do you use creek water? I notice mine do not like city water. They grow so fast with rain water. They just survive with city water.

For me, rain is always best for field grown plants, creek water second and spring water last. I suppose I could do testing on a
L 3 sources, but I don’t. No money in hops for me so as long as I get 8 or more lbs a year, I’m happy

Hello out there. I ran into a problem with my hops and in trying to solve it, may have killed them. They were fairly heavily infested with aphids, so I sprayed them with potassium soap. This seemed like a good solution for hops from what I read. However, the very next day the leaves turned black and most of them have died. They look dried out, despite being watered regularly. Now the stems in the pot are turning brown and the plants have stopped growing. Has anybody had a similar experience?

Unfortunately, their untimely near-death has coincided with an unfortunate stomach diagnosis which is forcing me to cut way back on beer. Still, with a wet hop IPA, the idea is to drink it fast, so if they somehow manage to survive, I will brew one and invite some people over to polish it off.

Dang, what happened to your plants doesn't sound good at all.

I haven't used potassium soap, but I have heard of spraying aphids with a weak soapy solution. They're fairly fragile and it shouldn't take much. Even a good blast of water can at least knock them off.
Is the soap oily or tend to look like it stays wet? Only thing I can think of is maybe it was applied heavily in the morning before a very hot, sunny day and the plants got burned. That's just a wild guess, though.

    Hope they bounce back.
